147.Chapter 147
Ella was stunned when she got the call. Ever since Ophelia told her to keep out of Alaric’s sight, she’d been keeping her distance, scared to death he’d spot her.
“It’s nothing,” Ophelia said, not really in the mood to explain. She just sighed, a little exasperated.
It’s not like she wanted to either, but her brain just short-circuited for a second and she let him get in the car.
“But Mr. Caldwell doesn’t even know me. Why are you so worried he’ll spot me?” Ella asked, still confused. But since Ophelia told her to, she just did as she was told, no questions asked.
“He’s a sharp guy. If it were just you or just me, he probably wouldn’t think twice. But if we show up together, I’m afraid he might start putting two and two together,” Ophelia replied. She never let her guard down around Alaric.
Ella blinked, looking a bit lost. “Seriously, I doubt it. He’s probably only got eyes for you. Why would he even notice me?” Honestly, she couldn’t see herself ever catching Alaric’s eye.
“But when we came over today, he was already starting to suspect my real destination was the Lotus Vista Club.
O
“On its own, that’s not a huge deal, but if he spots you too, I’m pretty sure he’ll start connecting the dots,” Ophelia said, shrugging. ‘Better to play it safe than be sorry,’ she thought.
After all, she and Ella had already ended up in Alaric’s line of sight together more than once. Last time at the restaurant, Ophelia was sure Alaric had lingered on Ella a little longer than usual.
Luckily, Ella was sharp enough to bail early, otherwise, who knows what he might’ve figured out.
Ella sized Ophelia up with a knowing look, then leaned in and whispered, “Boss, you act like you know Mr. Caldwell inside out. Don’t tell me you’re actually planning to accept that family-arranged marriage and shack up with him?”
Ophelia froze for a second, then slapped her palm to Ella’s forehead and pushed her away with a look of utter disdain. “Quit with the wild theories. Try sticking to reality for once, will you?”
“So, you’ve got a little crush on Mr. Caldwell, huh?” Ella teased, flashing Ophelia a mischievous grin. “Is that serious enough for you?”
Ophelia couldn’t help but roll her eyes at Ella. “Can we just get back to business?”
‘Now she’s just getting ridiculous. That’s so like her,’ Ophelia thought, shaking her head.
“Come on, just do me a favor and spill it,” Ella pleaded, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. She was convinced there was some drama between those two.
She felt like she’d just landed the hottest gossip firsthand.
“All you need to know is that Alaric is trouble. Stay away if you want to keep your peace,” Ophelia shot back, her eyes full of annoyance. Just thinking about that drama king gave her a headache.
Ella studied Ophelia closely, trying to figure out if she was actually serious. Seeing how genuine Ophelia looked, Ella’s lips twitched in disbelief.
After all, they’re talking about Alaric here, the heartthrob every girl in Dunhollow dreams about.
“Boss, I honestly don’t think Mr. Caldwell is as terrifying as you say. Plus, I really think you two would make a great couple.
“You’re both smart and good-looking, if you got together, it’d be the kind of love where both sides are equals! Who wouldn’t be jealous?” Ella sighed, totally envious.
Ophelia just stared at her, totally speechless, and let out a long sigh. “Don’t you have anything else to say?”
