148.Chapter 148
Ophelia couldn’t help but laugh, both amused and helpless. ‘She’s really trying to pull a fast one on me, she thought.
“Since when did you get so nosy?” Ophelia rolled her eyes at Ella, unable to believe how far she was going to dig for gossip. ‘She’s really pulling out all the stops to get me to spill, she thought.
When Ella saw that Ophelia really wasn’t into him at all, she just pouted and her curiosity fizzled out on the spot.
The coffee was served, steam rising from the cups. As they drank, the conversation naturally shifted to company gossip and work drama.
Dusk was settling in.
The two of them left the café.
Ella took off first, while Ophelia went to fetch her car.
Just as she got to her car, a group of muscle-bound thugs suddenly blocked her way.
Ophelia frowned, instinctively stepping back, her gaze icy and alert. “Who are you?” her voice was cold as steel.
“Hmph, you backstabber! I finally tracked you down,” a shrill, piercing voice cut through the air.
Ophelia looked up and saw Abigail storming out from behind the thugs, fuming with anger.
Ophelia arched an eyebrow, a mocking smile tugging at her lips. “Backstabber?”
‘The Vossen family eats people alive and doesn’t even bother to spit out the bones, and now they have the nerve to call me a backstabber?’ Ophelia thought, her sarcasm practically dripping.
“What are you staring at me for? Did I say something wrong?” Abigail spat, her teeth clenched in hatred. “Aaron’s been sentenced. His whole life is ruined, and it’s all because of you!”.
Ophelia rolled her eyes, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “He brought it on himself.”
‘So that’s what all this rage is about, Aaron got sentenced, Ophelia realized, her mind clicking into place.
‘Looks like Abigail’s hit rock bottom and came here just to dump her misery on me,’ Ophelia thought, a faint smirk tugging at her lips.
“How can you be so cold? No matter what, the Vossen family took you in and raised you. Are you really set on tearing us apart?” Abigail hissed. Just picturing her eldest son rotting in prison made her want to rip Ophelia to shreds.
“He messed up, so now he’s facing the consequences. That’s his own fault. But if you’re desperate to blame someone…” Ophelia gave Abigail a frosty, mocking glance. “Maybe you should go home and ask yourself if you ever taught him right from wrong.”
The bottom line was that if a child turned out rotten, the responsibility lay with the parents. They had planted the seeds, so they shouldn’t have blamed the whole world when the harvest went bad.
Abigail’s face kept changing colors, from pale to flushed, and she could barely catch her breath.
‘That damn girl is getting bolder by the day. She used to act all sweet and obedient, but now she’s just twisting the knife in my chest over and over, Abigail seethed, her fury reaching a boiling point.
She was so mad, her cheeks were literally quivering with rage.
“Let’s see how long you can keep mouthing off,” Abigail snarled, her eyes blazing with fury as she glared at Ophelia. With a sharp wave of her hand, she barked, “Grab her!”
“Oh, so you’re planning to join Aaron in prison? You really do have that mother-son bond, huh,” Ophelia said, arms crossed, her tone cool and unbothered as she shot Abigail a sideways glance.
