156.Chapter 156
But as just the assistant, he didn’t dare ask. He just kept his head down and drove, trying to make himself as invisible as possible.
Ophelia shot a sideways glance at Alaric. ‘Why does he suddenly look so annoyed?’ she wondered.
Feeling her gaze, Alaric turned to look at her, his expression already back to normal.
Alaric leaned in, his voice low and teasing. “So, Ophelia, you thinking about teaming up with me?”
Ophelia curled her lips into a confident grin. “If the project’s worth it, I’m all in.”
Seriously, who’d ever say no to more money? If the deal’s good, she was game.
“Deal. I’ll be waiting for you at Caldwell Group,” Alaric said, his eyes sparkling with mischief as he leaned in, voice dropping to a teasing murmur. “Don’t make me wait too long, Ophelia.”
Ophelia rolled her eyes at Alaric, totally unimpressed. ‘Ugh, there he goes again. Can’t this guy be serious for even a minute?” she thought.
“I’ll have my assistant reach out to you,” Ophelia replied coolly. ‘Sure, I’m fine with working together, but why does it always have to be me? Can’t we just do things by the book?’ she grumbled inwardly.
Alaric raised an eyebrow, a wry look flickering across his face. ‘So she’d really rather not deal with me herself, huh?’ he thought.
‘Assistant, huh?’ Alaric muttered under his breath.
Alaric’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully as he asked, “You mean the one I’ve seen with you a few times?”
Ophelia gritted her teeth inwardly. ‘Of course he noticed. Damn it.’
‘Trust Alaric to catch on, he never misses a thing, she thought.
Ophelia just nodded. “Yeah, it’s Ella.”
Alaric caught every flicker of emotion on her face, a faint smile tugging at his lips as he watched her, eyes full of admiration.
When he exposed her assistant’s identity, Ophelia was taken aback for just a moment, but quickly regained her cool, accepting it with effortless composure.
That unshakable composure, that vibe like she’s always in control…
‘She really is an endless gold mine, there’s always something new about her, Alaric mused.
“Ophelia, I saved you again today. So, will you give yourself to me?” Alaric gazed at her with hopeful eyes, like a kid waiting for candy.
Ophelia’s lips twitched. ‘Seriously, this guy has a real talent for driving me crazy, she thought.
“Nope,” Ophelia replied, utterly unfazed, like she was just rejecting a pitch she didn’t care about, not turning down a love
confession.
Alaric was caught off guard for a second, then gave a frustrated, almost defeated smile.
‘Man, this girl is stone-cold, he thought.
He’d figured she’d say no, but he didn’t expect her to shut him down so fast, not even a pause, not a flicker of doubt. “Ophelia, my heart hurts,” Alaric moaned, clutching his chest and just letting himself fall against her shoulder, looking all pitiful and weak.
“Oh, come on, Alaric, enough already,” Ophelia said, rolling her eyes. ‘If you’re gonna fake it, at least make it believable,’ she thought.
She didn’t buy his heartache for a second. ‘This sly wolf, his playing weak skill is maxed out, seriously, she scoffed to herself.
He was just trying to tease her and get her attention, but he hadn’t realized how good she smelled.
Once he got close, he found himself not wanting to leave her side at all.
“Alaric, sit up already,” Ophelia huffed, about to lose it as he refused to budge and just kept leaning on her.
