Chapter 158
158.Chapter 158
‘Those two have been hanging out a lot lately. Looks like things are going smoothly between them. The engagement is probably just around the corner,’ Victoria mused.
Ophelia froze for a second, then quickly made up an excuse. “He… he had stuff to do.”
She wasn’t about to admit she’d kicked him out, no way she was letting him come in and start running his mouth again. ‘Everyone already thinks there’s something going on between me and Alaric. If I let him keep talking, the rurnors will just get worse, Ophelia thought.
“Ophelia, where did your car break down? How did you just happen to run into Mr. Caldwell?” Zoe asked, her tone deceptively casual.
But inside, she was seething with jealousy, the feeling eating her up.
‘Ophelia’s moves are honestly next level. No wonder she skips coming home after school, she’s probably out there plotting to run into Alaric, Zoe thought.
‘Car trouble, huh? Yeah right, like she didn’t sabotage her own car, Zoe scoffed to herself.
Ophelia shot Zoe a look, her brow furrowing. ‘Zoe’s got the fake concern act down. On the surface she sounds caring, but she’s totally throwing shade, hinting I set up the whole thing with Alaric, Ophelia thought.
“A coincidence is just a coincidence, isn’t it?” Ophelia played the innocent card, shrugging. “If you think it’s just too perfect, why not go ask Alaric yourself why he happened to show up right then?”
That line was like twisting a knife in Zoe’s chest, making her bleed inside.
‘If you think someone’s plotting, go ask Alaric. If anyone’s got an agenda, it’s him, not me, Ophelia thought, tossing the blame right back.
It was a shameless power move, a direct hit to Zoe’s pride.
Zoe clenched her fists so hard her nails dug into her palms, using the pain to keep herself from snapping.
Zoe forced a laugh, pretending to be the tolerant sister. “Come on, Ophelia, you’re kidding. Why would I ever go ask Mr. Caldwell? I’m just looking out for you, that’s all.”
Ophelia scoffed. ‘Spare me, I really can’t afford your kind of concern, she thought.
“Ophelia, how could your car break down? Oliver just bought it for you, and it’s practically brand new. Aren’t those cars supposed to be top-notch?” Zoe pressed, clearly trying to poke holes in her story since she didn’t dare mention Alaric
anymore..
She was determined to call Ophelia out, hell-bent on exposing her lies and showing everyone what a manipulator she really
was.
“Car trouble?” Oliver stepped in, catching the tail end of Zoe’s comment.
“Oliver’s back!” Zoe’s eyes sparkled with anticipation. ‘Now let’s see how Ophelia wriggles out of this. Is she really going to diss the car her big brother gave her?’ she thought.
“Meeting ended early today, so I got home ahead of schedule,” Oliver said, plopping down on the couch.
Ophelia glanced up at him with a soft smile. “Hey, Oliver.”
“I overheard you guys talking about the car. Did something happen?” Oliver asked, his usually cool eyes showing a hint of concern as he looked at Ophelia.
“It’s really nothing,” Ophelia said, trying to play it down. After all, it was just an excuse she came up with.
She couldn’t exactly tell them she’d run into the Vossen family right as she was about to get in her car.
But Zoe cut in, putting on her best concerned act. “Oliver, Ophelia’s car broke down on the way. We were just asking her about it.”
‘Bet she won’t admit it now that Oliver’s here, Zoe thought, feeling smug.
