171 Chapter 171
171.Chapter 171
Alaric strolled over and sat down across from her, his eyes sparkling with mischief. “Ophelia, did you know I was here and travel all this way just to chase after me?”
“Maybe you’re the one following me. Why are you here?” Ophelia shot him a defiant glare. ‘As if I’d come looking for him, she scoffed inwardly.
Alaric raised an eyebrow, then smiled, clearly satisfied.
‘Huh, for once she didn’t mention calling off the engagement or insisting we’re nothing to each other, Alaric mused, a bit taken aback.
Ophelia frowned, giving him a sidelong look. “What are you smiling at?”
Then she suddenly snapped to attention, glaring at Alaric. “You really did follow me here, didn’t you?”
“Nope,” Alaric replied, his eyes soft with a gentle smile. “I just dropped by to check out a company I’m thinking of buying. Didn’t expect to bump into you here. So, what are you doing here?”
He’d just wanted to mess with her a little. Of course, he knew she wasn’t here for him.
Ophelia didn’t bother to hide it. “I promised to check on a patient,” she said.
“So, when are you heading back?” Alaric asked offhandedly, not the least bit surprised, he knew exactly what she could do. “About a week,” Ophelia replied with a shrug, totally unfazed.
Alaric’s eyes grew a shade darker, not sounding too pleased. “That long?”
“I looked into the patient’s situation before I came. They’ll probably need ongoing treatments, so rather than running back and forth, I decided to just stay here,” Ophelia explained, her voice growing serious as she talked about the case.
Alaric fell silent, looking like he was deep in thought.
Ophelia ignored him and dug in as soon as the food hit the table.
Alaric shot her a glance, chuckled softly, and shook his head with a teasingly indulgent smile. “Ophelia, aren’t you even a little curious if I’ve had lunch?”
“Did you?” Ophelia replied flatly, not even bothering to look up.
‘Like I care whether he’s eaten or not, she thought.
‘It’s not like I asked him to come here,’ she added inwardly.
“Just ate, but thanks for worrying about me, Ophelia,” Alaric said, acting like her concern had absolutely made his day. Ophelia’s lips twitched, she almost rolled her eyes. ‘Should’ve kept my mouth shut, she thought.
“Since you’ve already eaten, Alaric, maybe you could stop hovering and let me finish my meal in peace,” Ophelia said, not bothering to hide the fact that she wanted him gone.
She had to head out to see her patient as soon as she finished eating, she definitely didn’t have time to waste on him. Alaric leaned back in his chair, drawling, “I’m sticking around with you, Ophelia.”
“Honestly, I really don’t need that,” Ophelia replied, flashing a polite but obviously fake smile, her eyes practically begging him to leave.
“This is your first time in Clearwater City, right, Ophelia?” Alaric smoothly changed the subject, acting like he was just making small talk.
Ophelia raised an eyebrow at him, not bothering to answer, but there was a hint of curiosity in her eyes as she tried to figure him out.
‘Why is he suddenly asking me that?’ she wondered.
“It’s my first time here too,” Alaric went on, undeterred by her silence.
Ophelia gave him a calm, unreadable look, clearly waiting to see what he’d come up with next.
‘Something tells me whatever he says next is going to annoy me, she thought.
Seeing her look a little interested, Alaric smirked like it was the most obvious thing ever. “I’m actually staying here for a week too.

“Since we’re both strangers in this city, maybe we should stick together and watch each other’s backs. What do you say, Ophelia?”
