191 Chapter 191
191.Chapter 191
Abigail was already in custody, but Layla was still playing the drama as a devoted sister. It figures the Vossen family are all cut from the same selfish cloth.
Layla’s face went pale, and she said helplessly, “Mom made a mistake, and she’s already paid the price. Please, Ophelia, don’ t hold it against us anymore.”
“You’re not even worth my anger,” Ophelia said coldly. “Just stay out of my sight from now on.”
Layla flinched as if she’d been startled, taking a step back with a hurt look. “Ophelia, don’t be so harsh. Even if you’re upset, I didn’t do any of those things. You shouldn’t take it out on me.”
As she spoke, her eyes kept darting over to Alaric.
‘What a manipulative snake, Ophelia thought. ‘She’s trying to make Alaric think I’m cold-hearted and unforgiving.’
‘And that whole scared little bunny routine. Does she really expect Alaric to notice her, or maybe swoop in and defend her just because she looks pitiful?’
‘Her scheming is written all over her face.’
Ophelia snorted sarcastically. “Why do you keep looking at him? Hoping he’ll bail you out? Stop dreaming. That fall didn’t hurt you, but did it at least knock some sense into your head?”
Alaric wasn’t the type to fall for a pretty face or play the hero just because a girl acted helpless.
‘What on earth made Layla think Alaric would ever pity her?’ Ophelia wondered.
Alaric had been keeping an eye on Ophelia the whole time, and when he heard her, he couldn’t help but smile a little wider.
‘She’s starting to care about me, isn’t she?’ he thought.
‘Looks like she’s actually getting jealous now, just because someone else is trying to get close to me.’
Layla hadn’t expected Ophelia to roast her so directly. Her face went from pale to green with annoyance. She was seriously pissed.
“Ophelia, you’ve got it all wrong. That’s not what I meant,” Layla said, biting back her frustration and trying hard to keep up her sweet, innocent act.
She had to keep up her good-girl image and make sure Alaric noticed her. If she messed up now, all the effort she’d put in today would go straight down the drain.
She’d been hunting for Alaric for days with zero luck, so she’d resorted to following Ophelia around. Finally, her persistence paid off and she managed to bump into him.
As long as Alaric saw how perfect she was, he’d totally ditch Ophelia and pick her instead.
So no matter what, she had to keep up the act.
“Say whatever you want,” Ophelia said, shooting Layla a look of pure contempt. “No one cares. Just stay out of our sight and stop making us sick.”
Ophelia was so blunt that Layla wanted nothing more than to slap her right then and there.
But with Alaric watching, she had no choice but to put on her best innocent act, forcing her eyes to turn red and looking all pitiful. “Ophelia, do you really have to say that about me? You used to be part of the Vossen family, too…”
Ophelia shot Layla a frosty glare, her voice icy. “Can you stop bringing up the Vossen family? Just hearing that name makes me want to puke. Good dogs know to get out of the way. Move.”
With that, Ophelia walked right past her, not wanting to lay eyes on that black-hearted bitch for another second.
Spending even a single extra second with someone like Layla was pure torture for her eyes, ears, and soul.
Alaric couldn’t be bothered with Layla and immediately followed Ophelia out.
“Ophelia, wait for me,” he called out. Now that he finally had her attention, he was determined to stay by her side and make sure she noticed him.
Layla was left standing there, totally dumbfounded as they walked away.
