Chapter 272
Chapter 272
He was basically telling him, ‘None of this is any of your business, kid. Go worry about your homework. Declan’s face went ghostly pale. He just stood there, frozen, watching them leave, feeling like his heart had just dropped into a bottomless pit.
“Hey, let go of me,” Ophelia huffed, shooting Alaric a glare, clearly annoyed.
‘Why does he have to grab me just to talk?’ she grumbled inwardly.
“Ophelia, did your feelings change?” Alaric said, looking all pitiful and heartbroken, like he was the one who’d just been dumped.
Ophelia’s lips twitched in annoyance. “What nonsense are you spouting? Declan and I just bumped into each other and grabbed lunch, that’s it.”
‘Change my feelings? Seriously? Declan and I are just schoolmates, nothing more, Ophelia thought, rolling her
eyes.
Alaric instantly perked up, a bright smile spreading across his face. “So you haven’t changed at all. You still like me, Ophelia.”
Ophelia realized a little too late that she’d let Alaric totally hijack the conversation.
“Quit making stuff up. Who says I like you?” she snapped, exasperated. ‘Ugh, he’s so slick, if I drop my guard for even a second, I’m done for,’ she thought.
“You do. You literally just admitted it,” Alaric said stubbornly, not giving her a chance to wriggle out of it.
Ophelia shot him a look and couldn’t even be bothered to deal with him, so she just switched topics. “So, what brings you here?”
“I came to have lunch with you, but you’d already finished. Now I’m stuck here starving,” Alaric said, acting all pitiful as he rubbed his stomach like he hadn’t eaten in days.
“Don’t try to guilt-trip me. You did this to yourself,” Ophelia replied with a shrug, totally unfazed.
‘Honestly, look at the time. If he’s hungry, that’s his own problem. It’s not like he told me he was coming, ever heard of calling ahead?’ Ophelia thought, exasperated.
“I’m so hungry I can barely stand. Aren’t you going to help me, Ophelia?” Alaric said, not even a hint of embarrassment at being called out. He just rested his chin on her shoulder, sounding all weak and pitiful.
He looked just like a big, obedient puppy, making it almost impossible not to reach out and ruffle his hair.
“Alaric, seriously, enough already,” Ophelia said, her lips twitching as she tried not to laugh.
“Ophelia, I’m really hungry,” Alaric whined, sounding all pitiful.
Ophelia couldn’t help but sigh, giving in. “So what do you want now?”
“Come eat with me,” Alaric whined, rubbing his chin on her shoulder like he was begging for attention.
Ophelia froze for a second, her heart fluttering unexpectedly, like a feather brushing across it, sending little ripples through her chest.
“Alright,” she found herself agreeing before she even realized it.
But the moment she said yes, her cheeks went bright red. Flustered, she quickly pushed Alaric off and walked ahead in a hurry.
‘I can’t believe I actually gave in. Even though I know he’s just faking it, I still couldn’t bring myself to turn him down, Ophelia thought, feeling helplessly soft-hearted.
Alaric watched her retreating figure, an indulgent smile playing at his lips as he followed after her, his mood light and cheerful.
