Chapter 281

Chapter 281

“Guess you’re out here just because you’re bored, huh?” Ophelia didn’t even bother to look, she recognized Alaric’s voice Instantly.

Alaric raised an eyebrow, flashing a devilish grin. “Of course, I’m here to keep you company, Ophelia.”

Ophelia couldn’t help but roll her oyos at him. “I’m not a three-year-old. I don’t need someone to babysit me.”

Alaric just shrugged, playing along with her. “Thon maybe I just want to be with you, Ophelia.”

“You should probably head back inside. Haven’t you noticed how those people are giving us these miserable looks? It’s like I snatched away their meal ticket or something,” Ophelia teased.

She knew perfectly well that everyone here was desperate to suck up to Alaric, but with him clearly not interested in talking business, it was no wonder they all looked so let down.

“If they can’t come to me, they’ll just go bug your brother Instead,” Alaric said, like he didn’t give a damn. Honestly, he was loving every second of this.

God knows, when he walked in and saw her standing there, laughing and joking with some other guy, he was losing his mind inside.

Right now, all he wanted was to stay by her side and chase away those annoying men buzzing around her. Ophelia paused for a second, then couldn’t help but laugh. “Wow, you’re really good at dodging responsibility. Oliver doesn’t owe you squat.”

“Hey, that’s what bro-in-laws are for,” Alaric said with a shameless grin, clearly not losing any sleep over dumping everything on Oliver.

Ophelia shot him a playful glare. “Oh, please. Quit it. Who are you even calling bro-in-law?”

He was getting way too chummy, tossing around ‘bro-in-law’ like it was already official, not caring one bit if anyone else agreed.

“Obviously Oliver. Who else would it be?” Alaric insisted, like it was the most obvious thing ever.

Ophelia ground her teeth, her voice carrying a hint of threat. “Alaric, stop dreaming. Or do you need me to help. you snap out of it?”

“Ophelia, you’re breaking my heart,” Alaric said, clutching his chest in mock pain.

Ophelia rolled her eyes, exasperated. “Alaric, should I invite everyone outside to come watch your dramatic performance?”

“Doesn’t bother me, as long as you’re happy, Ophelia,” Alaric replied, completely unfazed, almost looking forward to it.

“Do I look happy to you?” Ophelia snapped, grinding her teeth. ‘He might not care about his dignity, but I still have mine.

Alaric chuckled fondly, then leaned against the railing, gazing down at her. “Ophelia, honestly, today’s just too perfect.

“Pretty much everyone from Dunhollow’s business scene is here, and all the old friends of the Rowle and Caldwell families showed up. Why not take the chance and announce our engagement? What do you think?”

“You’re unbelievable…” Ophelia started, but as soon as her eyes met his, whatever scolding she had ready just vanished.

His eyes were so deep, it was like they had a spell on her, she just couldn’t look away.

“So if you’re not saying anything, I’ll take that as a yes,” Alaric murmured, leaning in, his breath warm against her ear, voice dripping with temptation.

Her heart gave a jolt, and before she even realized what was happening, she turned her head, accidentally ending up kissing him.
