Chapter 288

Chapter 288

Ophelia freshened up a bit and made her way downstairs.

In the dining room, Asher, Victoria, and Oliver were already there.

“Hey, Mom, Dad, Oliver,” Ophelia greeted them as she walked over and took her seat.

“Ophelia, I heard you just got back this morning. Is Alaric doing okay now?” Victoria asked, her eyes full of

concern.

Guess she’d heard Ophelia slept the whole day. Taking care of Alaric last night must’ve really worn her out. “He’s fine. He’s probably already been discharged,” Ophelia replied with a calm smile.

“That’s good to hear. Still, how could something like this even happen?” Victoria let out a sigh.

Even though the news hadn’t spread, as the ones running the Rowle family, she and Adrian were well aware of what had happened.

“We’ve already got people looking into it. No matter what, we owe the Caldwell family an explanation,” Adrian said, his expression growing serious. Adrian clearly wasn’t taking this lightly.

Having something like this go down at their own party-and to Alaric, no less-was a major screw-up for the Rowle family.

“Thank goodness Ophelia was thinking fast and rushed him straight to the hospital,” Victoria said with a sigh of relief. Any more delay and things could’ve gotten really bad.

“Mom, Dad, you don’t have to worry. We’re not the only ones investigating. Alaric’s people are digging into it too. Whoever’s behind this, we’ll make sure they get caught,” Ophelia said, raising her voice on purpose and shooting a look at the doorway.

She’d noticed Zoe had just walked in.

Zoe’s face went ghostly white, and she stopped dead in her tracks, one shoe half on.

‘Alaric’s investigating too?’ Zoe thought, her heart doing a double take.

‘What if they come after me?’ she wondered, a wave of anxiety washing over her.

‘Whatever. My hands are clean. Even if they dig deeper, it won’t lead back to me, Zoe reassured herself, forcing herself to chill.

Zoe quickly composed herself, a faint smile on her lips as she strolled into the dining room. “Hey, Mom, Dad, Oliver, Ophelia.”

After saying hello, Zoe took her seat and, trying to sound casual, asked, “So, what are you guys talking about?”

“It’s nothing,” Victoria brushed it off, steering the conversation away. “So, where were you? You came home pretty late today.”

When it came to Alaric, they all agreed it was best to keep things on the down-low. Barely anyone knew, not even the rest of the Rowle family.

Zoe’s eyes narrowed. ‘So they’re keeping things from me… Guess they’re starting to suspect me too, she thought.

Zoe just lifted her head, a small smile tugging at her lips. “Just went to the library with some friends, so I got home late.”

“Alright then,” Victoria said, letting it go and just telling Zoe, “Go ahead and eat.”

“Okay,” Zoe answered, keeping quiet and turning her attention to her meal.

But deep down, Zoe felt a pang of bitterness. She’d never truly be part of this family, no matter what she did.

‘Honestly, from the very start, I was never one of them. I’m just an outsider, Zoe thought, the loneliness hitting her all over again.
