Chapter 289
Chapter 289
“Oliver, I heard you and Rowan Draven’s firm already struck a deal, and the contract’s about to be signed,” Ophelia asked, curiosity all over her face.
“Yeah,” Oliver replied, totally unfazed.
“Signing a contract?” Zoe blurted out, sounding shocked. “Weren’t we supposed to compete with the branch office?”
‘So if they’re signing with HQ, what was the point of all that talk about competition? Did Asher and Henry just get played? And what was the use of that proposal I risked stealing?’ Zoe thought, anxiety creeping in.
‘If everything I did was pointless, will Asher even keep his promise to me?’ she wondered, her thoughts in a whirl.
Zoe’s thoughts were all over the place, and she felt herself starting to freak out a little.
It wasn’t until she noticed how eerily quiet the dining room had become that she snapped out of it, her heart skipping a beat.
Everyone was looking at her, their faces unreadable and a little complicated.
“Zoe, what did you just say?” Oliver’s voice was cold as ice. As the head of Rowle Group, he could be downright intimidating when he wanted to be.
Zoe swallowed nervously, her face turning pale. “N-nothing,” she mumbled.
“Zoe, you never used to care about the company. How come you suddenly know so much about the headquarters and the branch?” Adrian asked, though his voice was calm, there was a trace of doubt in it. Things were different now. The family head had already warned him several times to keep an eye on Asher and Henry.
Zoe’s sudden change in behavior really threw him for a loop.
Zoe dodged his gaze, trying to play it cool. “I just happened to overhear them chatting at the party last night.”
“Oh, that’s it,” Victoria said, letting out a sigh of relief.
Oliver spoke up, sounding totally indifferent. “Doesn’t matter. The whole competition was just us putting on a show for them.”
“What do you mean by that, Oliver?” Zoe asked, feigning confusion, though her heart was racing. She had a gut feeling there was more to it than he was letting on.
“Just what I said,” Oliver replied, then went quiet.
Seeing Oliver’s cold, distant expression, Zoe bit her lip and stayed silent.
Oliver was always so icy. If he didn’t want to talk, there was no way she could get anything out of him.
Besides, her little slip-up probably made everyone suspicious, so all she could do now was keep her head down and not make any moves. Still, she knew she had to give Asher a heads-up about what happened tonight.
Zoe kept her head down, quietly eating, completely unaware that Ophelia was watching her with a dark, unreadable gaze.
Ophelia’s eyes narrowed, her gaze shadowed with darkness. ‘She’s really lost her mind. Her inside hoax is showing and she doesn’t even realize it; Ophelia thought.
‘The family was practically testing her, and she actually thought she got away with it. And Oliver’s trap was so obvious, and she didn’t even notice, Ophelia sneered to herself.
‘She had her chance. If she doesn’t cherish it, she has no one to blame but herself, Ophelia thought.
Ophelia looked away, letting out a quiet sigh. ‘If someone’s determined to court death, there’s nothing anyone can do to stop them, she thought.
The next day rolled around.
