Chapter 314
Chapter 314
She set the cup down, sat on the edge of the bed, and reached out to feel his pulse, making sure everything was okay.
After a moment, her eyes softened with relief.
‘Looks like he’s doing well, and bouncing back pretty quick; Ophelia thought.
She pulled her hand back and was just about to get up when, before she knew it, Alaric grabbed her wrist and pulled her straight into his arms, holding her close.
“You weren’t even asleep?” Ophelia frowned, a little annoyed, but she didn’t dare move, afraid she’d mess with his injury.
“I was asleep, but the moment you came back, I woke up,” Alaric said, shameless as ever.
Ophelia was speechless. She knew he was lying, but she didn’t even bother to argue.
“Just go to sleep,” she said. ‘He’s obviously doing this on purpose. He probably already has some snarky comeback ready. If I argue with him, I’m just going to end up annoyed, Ophelia thought.
Seeing she didn’t pull away, Alaric’s lips curled into a satisfied smile and he shut his eyes, content.
Only with her in his arms did he finally feel at peace.
Ophelia was exhausted too, and before long, she drifted off to sleep as well.
She’d meant to wait until he was asleep before getting up, but ended up sleeping right through till morning herself.
Ophelia was woken by the sound of a phone ringing.
She blinked a few times before slowly opening her eyes, looking toward the source of the sound.
Alaric’s phone was buzzing nonstop on the nightstand. Ophelia sat up and handed it to him. “Your phone’s ringing. Why aren’t you answering it?”
As she spoke, her gaze accidentally landed on the screen.
When she saw the photo on it, her eyes flew wide in shock. ‘Wait, what did I just see?’ she thought.
Alaric didn’t even notice her reaction. He just picked up the phone and answered, “Hello?”
“Dead?” Alaric’s voice went cold as ice. “What happened?”
Ophelia’s gaze flickered, and she had a gut feeling this was about Cameron.
Sure enough, a moment later, Alaric looked at her and quietly said, “Cameron’s dead.”
“Are you sure?” Ophelia asked, unable to shake the feeling that this was just way too convenient.
‘Seriously? We just sent people after him and now he’s dead?’ she thought.
“It’s confirmed,” Alaric replied, his gaze turning grim. “Apparently, he fell off a cliff while being chased last night. They found his body this morning. He’s gone.”
Ophelia was quiet for a moment, then finally said, “He had it coming.”
Since he did this to himself, there’s really nothing left to say.
“Let the cops deal with it,” she added. Now that he’s gone, it’s all over.
Seeing Ophelia looking a little down, Alaric spoke softly, “Whether he fell or got caught, it all ends the same for him.”
Do something wrong, you pay the price.
Even if they’d arrested him, the law would’ve taken care of him just the same.
Ophelia glanced up at him, noticing he was trying to comfort her, and she bit her lip, a little unsure.
“You don’t have to worry about me. I’m okay, really,” she said. ‘Sure, it caught me off guard at first, but it’s not
