Chapter 344
Chapter 344
‘Sweet little bunny? Please, Alaric thought, scoffing inwardly.
‘Not interested.’
Zoe choked on her words, staring at Alaric in disbelief.
It was like her heart had been ripped open, bleeding out, but she couldn’t even feel the pain anymore. Maybe she was just too numb to care.
“So in the end, I was the fool all along,” Zoe let out a hollow, bitter laugh, mocking herself. Even that last bit of defiance in her heart just made her look ridiculous.
Zoe looked up at Victoria, eyes brimming with tears as she bowed deeply. “Aunt Victoria, thank you for all your care over the years. I’m leaving. Take care.”
“Zoe…” Victoria’s eyes reddened again, her heart twisting with pain and unwillingness to let go.
But she knew this was the best way Ophelia and Oliver could give her. Sending her overseas was way better than letting her rot in prison.
“Zoe, once you’re out there, focus on your studies and live your life. You’re smart and capable. Don’t get stuck in the past. If you move on, you’ll have a good future,” Adrian sighed, his tone soft but serious. As long as she stopped clinging to her mistakes, she could still start over.
“Thank you, Uncle Adrian,” Zoe replied, taking a deep breath before turning to Samuel. “Let’s go.”
This wasn’t the road she’d chosen, but she’d walk it with her head held high.
“Seriously, after all she did, she just gets to leave?” Scarlett muttered, still not quite convinced.
‘So the whole thing with the proposal is just… over?’ Scarlett thought, unable to believe it was really that simple.
“Aunt Scarlett, you were just saying we were being too harsh on her, and now you think we’re letting her off too easy?” Ophelia said, her gaze shadowed and her voice layered with meaning.
Sure, Ophelia was handling Zoe, but that didn’t mean she was about to let Asher and the other uncle off easy.
“Oh, that’s not what I meant… I just think she needs to face the consequences if she’s ever going to grow,” Scarlett said, nervously avoiding everyone’s gaze.
Now that the scapegoat had been sent away, a cold wave of anxiety washed over Scarlett. She couldn’t shake the feeling that trouble was still lurking.
“So you think she still hasn’t suffered enough? Wow, Aunt Scarlett, all that talk about how much you care, color me impressed,” Ophelia said, her lips twisting into a sarcastic smile, her tone dripping with meaning.
“Ophelia, that’s not what Scarlett meant,” Claire said with a gentle smile, trying to smooth things over after Scarlett got shut down.
“We only felt sorry for Zoe because she had us all fooled. Now that we’ve realized we misjudged her, we just thought maybe we could make up for it somehow.”
“No need,” Ophelia replied, secretly rolling her eyes. ‘Please, spare me your so-called “compensation.” I really don’t need that kind of help, she thought, her patience wearing thin.
“Grandpa Rowle, if there’s nothing else, I’ll be heading out,” Alaric said, then turned to Ophelia. “Ophelia, you ready to go?”
He could see she wasn’t in the best mood and didn’t want to stick around any longer.
Ophelia glanced at him and nodded in agreement. “You really should get back to the hospital.”
Even though his wound had healed, he still needed plenty of rest.
They both got up to leave. Ophelia glanced over at Oliver, and he gave her a barely-there nod.
Ophelia arched a brow back at him, then headed out with Alaric.
