Chapter 355
Chapter 355
“Ophelia, it’s really you! For a second there, I thought I was dreaming,” Alaric grinned, his voice bubbling with excitement. He’d waited for her so long that, half-asleep, he’d almost convinced himself she was just a figment of his imagination.
Even as he spoke, Alaric refused to let go. His arm tightened around her slender waist, pulling her straight into his arms.
Ophelia was caught off guard as he tugged her right onto his lap. With a mischievous glint in his eyes, Alaric teased,” Seriously, what kind of meeting drags on forever? I was starting to think you were ditching me here. So, Ophelia, how are you going to make it up to me?”
“If I remember right, Mr. Caldwell, you were the one who insisted on tagging along to the office. I told you I’d be busy and couldn’t babysit you, and now you’re turning the tables on me?” Ophelia arched her brow, giving him a pointed look.
‘He’s the one who wanted to come, and now it’s my fault?’ Ophelia thought.
“But you’ve been working for ages. Are you not even going to eat lunch?” Alaric didn’t miss a beat, totally unfazed by her words.
Ophelia couldn’t help but roll her eyes as she said, “I’m literally here to drag you to lunch.”
With that, Ophelia gave Alaric a gentle push and slipped free from his arms.
‘Is this guy seriously addicted to hugging?’ Ophelia thought.
Alaric let out a helpless sigh, his arms feeling empty all of a sudden. ‘If I wasn’t worried she’d get mad, I’d totally steal a kiss right now. Those lips of hers are just way too tempting, he thought.
Alaric slowly rose to his feet, looking down softly at Ophelia. In a gentle voice, he said, “Come on, let’s go eat.”
As they stepped out of the office and found George still waiting outside, Alaric’s gaze turned cold as he spoke with a frosty edge, “Mr. Brown, is this project really that complicated?”
‘Damn, he’s really been waiting here all morning?’ Alaric thought.
“Can’t compare to how relaxed you are, Mr. Caldwell,” George shot back, not missing a beat. He knew Alaric was trying to get under his skin, and he wasn’t about to let it slide.
‘Man, he really stuck it out here all morning?’ George thought.
“It’s nothing, really. Ophelia just can’t stand to see me overexert myself. She worries working now will slow my recovery,” Alaric shrugged, a smug grin spreading across his face.
George’s brows knit even tighter, left speechless by Alaric’s blatant bragging.
George shot a look at Ophelia, his eyes narrowing briefly, his expression turning visibly annoyed.
Noticing the shift in his mood, Ophelia instinctively lowered her gaze, following the direction of his stare.
‘Ugh, this is so embarrassing, Ophelia thought.
Her clothes were a bit rumpled, probably from when Alaric hugged her earlier.
She hadn’t even noticed until George started staring, and now it was a total social death moment.
Feeling her cheeks heat up, Ophelia mumbled awkwardly, “Let’s just go to the restaurant.”
At this point, all Ophelia could do was play it cool and act like nothing had happened.
She headed out first, with Alaric trailing right behind her.
George watched their backs as they left, his eyes flashing with something complicated and unreadable.
Seeing he was still standing there, Ella gently nudged him, “Mr. Brown, let’s go.”
“Yeah,” George muttered, finally making his way toward the elevator.
The elevator, usually spacious, now felt stifling. The air thick with tension as everyone stood in awkward silence, each wrapped up in their own thoughts.
