Chapter 373
Chapter 373
Alaric thought, ‘She’s obviously upset, so why does she get annoyed whenever I try to care about her?’
“How could I not be interested? Anything about you, Ophelia, I’m all in,” Alaric said, then naturally took his place right beside her, as if shielding her. The vibe between them was definitely a little flirty.
“Hey, why are you standing so close to me?” Ophelia rolled her eyes at him, clearly exasperated.
‘If you’re interested, just join the conversation. What’s with all the weird comments?’ Ophelia thought.
Ignoring her protest, Alaric said softly, “Ophelia, what project are you two talking about?”
“Are you really interested?” Ophelia frowned, looking unsure. ‘The Caldwell Group doesn’t even do this kind of project. Why would he care?’ she thought.
“Yeah, I hope you’ll give me a chance,” Alaric replied, dead serious. Though honestly, it was way too easy to misinterpret.
Ophelia shot him a frustrated glare and muttered under her breath, “Can you just talk straight?”
Alaric’s eyes sparkled with amusement. ‘Looks like the little hedgehog isn’t mad anymore. Guess she’s in a better mood,’ he thought.
“If you’re interested, Mr. Caldwell, we’d be lucky to have you on board,” one of the group joked.
“Guess we owe this to Ms. Draven,” another chimed in.
The rest started laughing and teasing. Even in business circles, word had gotten around about the Rowle and Caldwell families tying the knot.
“Mr. Caldwell, maybe you should actually learn about the project before making any decisions,” George said, his voice cool with a mocking edge.
He was basically telling Alaric not to rush in blindly, or he’d just end up letting everyone down.
mind at all too
Alaric didn’t mind at all. He looked at Ophelia with a gaze full of fondness and said, “With you here, Ophelia, if you say it’s all good, I’ve got nothing to worry about.”
only abo
“Alaric, we’re talking business right now,” Ophelia said, giving him a helpless glance. “Try to be serious, okay?”
“I am serious,” Alaric replied in a low voice, his gaze intense as he locked eyes with her.
Ophelia froze for a moment. Meeting his eyes made her heart skip a beat, then go completely out of rhythm.
‘Why is he suddenly staring at me like that?’ she wondered.
Bianca’s eyes grew shadowed as she quietly gritted her teeth, then quickly walked over with an elegant smile. “Alaric, I just bumped into some friends over there and got caught up chatting for a bit,” she explained.
She played the part of Alaric’s companion, making it clear she had a reason for not being glued to his side.
After that, Bianca nodded to the others, switching into full-on star mode. “Hi, everyone. I’m Bianca.”
Everyone stared at her, their expressions turning a little complicated.
‘What’s going on here?’ everyone was thinking.
‘So she’s with Mr. Caldwell tonight? Then what about Ms. Draven?’ the crowd couldn’t help but gossip inwardly.
Bianca scanned the faces in the crowd, then suddenly pretended she’d only just noticed Ophelia, her voice laced with fake surprise. “Oh, Ophelia, you’re here too! I totally missed you earlier. You just kind of blend in, you know…”
She looked Ophelia up and down, then sighed theatrically, putting on a show of concern. “Ophelia, seriously, at an event like this, how could you show up looking so thrown together? I’ve got a private lounge set up. Why don’t I take you to change into something that actually fits the occasion?”
On the surface, Bianca sounded caring, but every word was a thinly veiled insult aimed at putting Ophelia down.
Ophelia raised an eyebrow and shot back with a mocking retort “As the CEO of Maplewood Capital, I don’t see anything wrong with my outfit. I’m here as a guest, not just someone’s arm candy.”
Bianca’s face briefly lost color. Ophelia had just put her in her place, no mercy.
