Chapter 374
Chapter 374
‘Seriously, he shows up with another woman and still goes after Ophelia? What’s his deal?’ George grumbled inwardly. “If your eyesight’s that bad, Mr. Brown, maybe you should go get it checked,” Alaric retorted coldly, shooting George a frosty glare.
He followed up with a warning, “And don’t even think about asking Ophelia. She’s got better things to do than deal with you.” There was no way Alaric would let Ophelia treat George again. One appointment and the guy was already trying to latch onto her. Over his dead body would that ever happen twice.
Ophelia’s lips twitched. ‘Did he really have to put it that way?’ she thought.
Even if he didn’t like George’s comment, he could’ve been a little more diplomatic about it.
She looked up, meeting Alaric’s dark, unreadable gaze, and raised an eyebrow. ‘Forget it, subtlety’s never been his thing,’ she thought.
George’s face darkened as he retorted, “What, didn’t you bring her here yourself, Mr. Caldwell?”
‘If you want to pretend there’s nothing going on, then maybe don’t show up with her in the first place, George grumbled inwardly.
‘Seriously, is he two-timing right in front of everyone?’ he scoffed to himself.
“No,” Alaric said flatly, without missing a beat.
George was momentarily stunned, his gaze growing guarded. ‘Is that for real? She’s not with him?’ he wondered.
Ophelia blinked in surprise. ‘Hold on, so Bianca’s not his date after all?’ she thought.
Alaric caught the looks on their faces, and his eyes flashed with understanding. He finally got what was going on.
“We just bumped into each other at the entrance and walked in together, that’s all,” Alaric explained, totally casual, like it was no big deal.
He never once looked away from Ophelia, making it obvious he was saying all this just for her.
Ophelia’s heart gave a weird little squeeze. She couldn’t quite put her finger on why.
She knew Alaric was the type who never explained himself. In business, he was ruthless and always got things done; no one would ever expect him to explain anything.
But tonight, in front of everyone, he actually bothered to clear things up over something so minor.
He said it for the whole room, but for some reason, Ophelia just knew that explanation was meant for her.
She bit her lip, almost without thinking, and nodded, letting him know she trusted him.
Alaric raised an eyebrow, his eyes glinting with a hint of mischief and meaning.
‘So she was clearly bothered when I walked in. Was it because she saw me coming in with Bianca?’ he wondered.
‘Is she jealous? Is she finally starting to care about me?’ Alaric thought, a grin tugging at his lips.
The amusement in Alaric’s eyes was impossible to miss, and Ophelia noticed it right away.
Coming back to herself, Ophelia glanced up at him, feeling like his eyes were almost burning into her, and that smile… There was something behind it.
“What are you smiling at?” Ophelia muttered, shooting him a frustrated look.
She just knew there was something more to that smile.
