Chapter 398
After dinner, Ophelia glanced at Alaric and said, “It’s getting pretty late. Don’t worry about me, you should go home and get some rest. I’ll be staying here at the office tonight.”
The lab results still weren’t out yet, and she had to stick around o keep an eye on them herself.
“Ophelia, you just thanked me, but you never said how you were going to thank me,” Alaric said, brushing off her words and switching the topic.
“Huh? So what do you want as a thank you?” Ophelia blinked, looking confused. ‘Is he actually serious about this?’ she thought.
“Let me go with you to the lab. I’m staying here with you tonight Alaric said, making his request for her ‘thank you’ clear.
‘Honestly, if he hadn’t put it that way, I probably wouldn’t have let him stay, Ophelia thought, feeling a bit helpless.
Sure, she was probably safe at work, but Alaric just didn’t want to leave her here by herself.
Ophelia blinked at him, a little flustered. “Wait, you… want to stay here?”
“I know I might not be much help, but at least you won’t have to be here all alone,” Alaric said honestly. ‘Honestly, I just want to be with her,’ he thought.
Ophelia bit her lip, feeling torn. She didn’t mind having him around, but she was just worried about his injuries, since he still wasn’t fully recovered.
But Alaric didn’t even let her say no. He stood up, grabbed her hand, and said, “If you don’t object, I’ll take that as a yes.”
“Hey!” Ophelia rolled her eyes, completely helpless. ‘Ugh, why is he always so pushy?’ she thought.
“Ophelia, you said you were onto something earlier. Any leads?” Alaric asked, sounding genuinely curious.
“I did find some toxins in the results, but it doesn’t look like any of them could actually knock someone out like that. I’m going to run a few more tests, just to make sure I didn’t miss anything,” Ophelia replied, her attention shifting right back to the lab work as she spoke.
Once they were in the lab, both slipped on their lab coats and sat down in front of the machines. It finally hit Ophelia what was going on, and she shot Alaric a look, clearly annoyed.
‘He’s getting way too good at distracting me lately, Ophelia thought, a little exasperated with herself.
Alaric caught her noticing and flashed a quick, mischievous grin then turned to the machine and asked, “You didn’t finish earlier. So, what did you find?”
He’d totally thrown her off on purpose, just so she wouldn’t get a chance to turn him down.
But he genuinely cared about what she found. After all, her results could save Mr. Rowle, and they were crucial to cracking
the case.
“I’ve analyzed all the samples, and none of these toxins are strong enough to actually poison someone. Plus, each one should show up in the tests. There’s no way they’d go undetected by a normal medical check,” Ophelia said, her tone growing more serious.
“Could it be because they’re mixing together somehow?” Alaric guessed, thinking maybe the toxins were interacting in a weird way.
“Just these few toxins wouldn’t cause symptoms like this, so I’m starting to think there’s another one we haven’t found yet,” Ophelia replied, her gaze sharpening, voice low and serious. “If that’s true, then someone involved is a real expert in poisons.”
Right now, she honestly wasn’t sure she could find a way to neutralize it before it’s too late.
