Chapter 408
“I get what you’re thinking, but this is your grandfather’s wish. What if he wakes up from happiness when he hears about your engagement to Alaric? Maybe it’ll bring him some luck and help him recover,” Victoria was convinced this was a good idea.
Ophelia felt speechless and said, “Mom, do you actually believe in that stuff?”
“I don’t really believe it, but what if it works…” Victoria trailed off It’s worth a shot, right? Even if it doesn’t help, it can’t make things any worse anyway, she thought.
“Mom, I’m honestly exhausted these days. Can you please just let me rest?” Ophelia whined softly, nestling her head on Victoria’s shoulder, trying to coax her.
Ophelia was surprised that her mom would bring this up, but saying yes was just out of the question.
Victoria gently ruffled Ophelia’s hair, and said with a smile, “I’m just a little worried, but I know you’re capable. As long as you know what you want, that’s all that matters.”
Of course Victoria could see that Ophelia was just dodging the question.
‘Forget it. I’ll just let her be. As long as she’s happy, that’s all that matters, Victoria thought.
“Great,” Ophelia murmured, leaning against Victoria’s shoulder, feeling warm and cozy.
“Alright, you’ve really been working hard lately. Go get some rest Victoria said softly with concern. “Things are tough and you’re under a lot of stress, but don’t forget to look after yourself.”
Ophelia gave Victoria a heartfelt hug and promised, “I will, Mom, promise.”
“Good,” Victoria replied, her eyes warm with affection as she gave Ophelia one last look before leaving the room.
Once the room was quiet, Ophelia leaned back on the couch and couldn’t help but shake her head with a chuckle.
She was seriously starting to wonder if Alaric had put some kind of spell on her whole family. It looked like they were all terrified he’d just leave her.
“If he really leaves, then maybe he’s just not the right man for me” Ophelia muttered, and then suddenly stopped in her tracks.
‘Wait, did I just say that? Have I already admitted to myself that Alaric means something to me?’ Ophelia thought, all taken
aback.
Suddenly, she felt no longer confused, and everything made sense.
Somehow, without her even noticing, her feelings for Alaric had changed ages ago.
She cared about him. She no longer tried to keep her distance, and being intimate with him didn’t bother her anymore… ‘So this is what it means to really fall for someone, Ophelia thought
She’d fallen for Alaric.
Now that she knew her feelings for sure, a sense of gentle sweetness bloomed in her heart.
Just then, her phone rang. Ophelia glanced at the caller ID and answered, “Hello?”
“Ophelia, are you getting ready to sleep?” Alaric’s voice was soft and caring on the other end of the phone.
“I’m just about to,” Ophelia said, her voice gentler than usual.
There was a brief silence on the other end of the phone before Alaric continued, a little cautious, almost tentative. “Ophelia, is something wrong?”
‘Something about her feels different,’ Alaric thought.
“Nothing, I’m fine,” Ophelia replied, raising her eyebrows. ‘What’s up with him tonight?’ she wondered.
Alaric still felt like something was wrong with her, but since Ophelia wasn’t saying anything, he decided not to press. He’d just wait until they met in person and see for himself.
“I’m glad you’re okay,” Alaric said, steering the conversation away. “Asher’s making moves, and there’s someone pulling strings for him. The weird part is, we can’t find a single clue about who it is. It’s like they’re ghosts.”
“So mysterious?” Ophelia’s eyes narrowed, a hint of watness in the gaze. ‘Is this person just helping Asher out, or Successfully unlocked! do they have their own plans in play?’ she won
