Chapter 413
This whole mess came out of nowhere, and the toxin was so rare there were almost no records about it anywhere. Dealing with it was a total nightmare.
With another failed attempt, Ophelia let out a heavy sigh, looking even more somber.
When she was racking her brain to figure out what went wrong, her phone rang.
“Miles,” Ophelia answered it right away.
“Ophelia, how’s it going?” Miles asked, getting straight to the point.
“Another failure,” Ophelia’s voice was tinged with disappointment.
They could keep running endless experiments, but who knew how much longer their grandpa could hang in there?
“I’m hitting a wall too,” Dylan admitted, sounding pretty defeated
There was a moment of heavy silence on the phone. Ophelia and Miles both just went quiet, not sure what to say next.
“Let’s go check on Grandpa at the Manor,” Miles finally said, breaking the silence.
“Sounds good,” Ophelia replied. “I’m heading over now.”
“See you in a bit,” Miles said before hanging up.
As soon as Ophelia stepped out of the lab, Ella rushed over and asked, “Boss, any luck?”
“Still nothing,” Ophelia shook her head with a sigh, looking a bit defeated.
“Don’t worry about it. Take a break and we’ll get back to it later,” Ella said, trying to comfort her.
“I’m heading back to the Rowle Manor for a bit. You get back to work,” Ophelia told her. With that, she left the office.
When Ophelia arrived at the Rowle Manor, Miles had just gotten there.
“Hey, Miles,” Ophelia greeted him.
“Hey, Ophelia,” Miles replied.
They shared a quick look and headed straight for their grandpa’s room.
“What brings you two here?” Asher asked, looking genuinely confused as he trailed after them.
“We just came to check on Grandpa,” Ophelia said and glanced at Asher. “Uncle Asher, how’s he been doing lately?”
“His body’s holding up fine, but he still hasn’t woken up,” Asher replied with a long sigh. “It’s got all of us on edge.”
“Don’t worry, Uncle Asher. Grandpa will wake up,” Ophelia said, trying to comfort him, though she stared at Asher, watching his face closely for any clue or reaction.
Asher clearly hesitated for a moment before putting on an awkward smile and echoing, “Yeah, I’m sure he will.”
“Uncle Asher, thanks for looking after Grandpa. You don’t have to tag along with us. Go take a break,” Miles said, barely bothering to hide his indifference.
Asher could tell Miles was just being polite and actually wanted him out of the way, and his face darkened a little.
“You’re welcome. It’s really no trouble. It’s just what family does! Scarlett said, giving Asher a pointed look.
Asher chimed in, “You guys rushed over here. No need to run upstairs right away. Why don’t you take a rest first?”
