Chapter 416
“I’m fine,” Ophelia let out a sigh. “We let our guard down on this one.”
Miles’s expression grew even more serious, and he said, “Indeed”
“At least we caught it early. There’s still a chance,” Alaric said softly, trying to comfort Ophelia. Then he asked, “What are you planning to do next?”
Miles glanced at Alaric, and then his gaze slowly shifted to Ophelia. His gaze went from confusion to realization.
Ophelia realized what he was implying and cleared her throat awkwardly.
“Well, Miles, my research hasn’t succeeded yet, but I’ve made some progress. There’s just a big obstacle I need to overcome…” Ophelia quickly avoided Miles’s gaze and changed the subject.
When she mentioned the antidote, Miles’s face darkened and he said, “I was supposed to come back to the Rowle Manor today to go over the research results, but I didn’t expect things to turn out like this for Grandpa.”
“Can we still use our previous research results for Grandpa, given his current condition?” Miles asked. Ophelia was the one who had checked on Grandpa before he was sent to the hospital, so Miles wasn’t sure about the specifics.
“Yes, we can,” Ophelia bit her lips, her expression hardening with a trace of anger. “They just drugged Grandpa a second time, so it’s just more serious than before, but we don’t need to change our research direction.”
After a moment of hesitation, Miles finally asked, his voice tight, “How much longer do you think Grandpa can hang in there?”
Ophelia shook her head, her expression grave, “I’m not sure.”
“I’ll be staying at the hospital for the next few days. Also, here… Ophelia handed Miles a report. “This is what I’ve managed to figure out lately. Maybe it’ll help you.”
“Okay,” Miles said seriously as he took the report. “Grandpa’s all yours now.”
After a brief pause, Miles added, “Be careful. The way you forced Grandpa out, Uncle Asher is definitely going to hold a grudge against you. He won’t let this slide.”
Ophelia’s eyes were cold as she replied, “Once we get the evidence, I won’t let him off the hook.”
‘How could he do this to his own father? Does he even have a heart?’ Ophelia was furious.
If she’d only suspected Asher before, now, after what happened to Grandpa, she was certain Asher was behind it.
Now, they needed to find the antidote as soon as possible, and gather evidence against Asher.
“I’m off to the lab, then,” Miles said. He knew there wasn’t much else he could do right now, so he’d better focus all his energy on the antidote.
After a pause, Miles looked at Alaric, reminding him firmly, “Make sure you keep her safe.”
“You can count on me,” Alaric replied with a gentle nod, his eyes steady and resolute.
He’d do whatever it took to keep her safe.
After Miles left, Alaric gave Ophelia’s hand a gentle squeeze and said, “Go get some rest. I’ll have someone keep an eye on things here.”
He could see she was completely worn out after a long day.
Ophelia just felt stifled and upset. She didn’t answer Alaric, and only shook her head.
