Chapter 435
The day slipped by in a whirlwind of work. Before Ophelia realized it, it was time to get off work.
In the lab, Ophelia was totally focused, her eyes locked on the instruments, holding her breath, afraid to miss even the slightest change.
She was right on the edge. Just one more reading, and she’d finally know if this antidote was a success.
The door was suddenly knocked on.
Hearing the knock, Ophelia snapped, “Not now! I’m busy!” She didn’t even look up, too focused to care whoever was at the door.
She kept her eyes locked on the instruments, barely breathing as she waited for the results.
Beep.
As the machine beeped, Ophelia stared at the numbers on the screen, holding her breath for a moment. Then a bright smile lit up her face. She cheered, “Awesome, it’s a success!”
She quickly jotted down the formula, and then finally got up to open the door.
When she saw Henry standing at the door, she raised her eyebrows slightly. She greeted, “Uncle Henry.”
“Ophelia, I heard you’ve been working on an antidote. How’s it coming along?” Henry asked with a hint of concern in his
eyes.
“It’s been alright so far,” Ophelia replied, keeping her answer vague and not giving away any specifics.
Then she countered, “Uncle Henry, did you come all the way here just to ask about my progress?”
“Oh, right,” Henry said after a pause, “I mean, if things really don’t work out, maybe we should talk to your uncle Asher to let him atone for his crimes and see if he can do something to get lighter punishment.”
“So, you mean, we’ll just cave to Uncle Asher’s threats and let him out?” Ophelia asked, her voice tinged with amusement.
‘Henry was already getting desperate to bail him out, huh?’ she thought.
“Of course we can’t just let him walk free. He did what he did, and he has to pay for it,” Henry said, putting on his usual good -guy act. “I mean, maybe we show some leniency to reduce his punishment a bit. He’s got it coming, but your grandpa’s health comes first, don’t you think?”
“That makes sense,” Ophelia nodded, playing along. “So, how is he expecting us to let him off? What’s his plan for getting a lighter sentence?”
“From what I know, he’s already confessed. If he hands over the antidote, maybe we can work out a leniency agreement and let him do a few years behind bars. If he’s out one day, I’ll make sure he stays in line and doesn’t stir up any more trouble,” Henry replied.
“Alright,” Ophelia agreed. “But ask him to hand over the antidote first. When Grandpa’s awake, he can sign off on the leniency agreement himself.”
“We’ll wait until your grandpa wakes up?” Henry’s face darkened. ‘If we have to wait for that, what’s the point of a leniency deal? Honestly, if your grandpa doesn’t ask for the harshest sentence, that’s already cutting him a break, he thought.
“Exactly. He hurt Grandpa, so he needs Grandpa’s forgiveness. It’s not our place to sign anything for him,” Ophelia shot back, sounding perfectly reasonable. “Don’t you agree, Uncle Henry?”
Henry could only smile awkwardly and mumble, “Yeah, you’re right.”
