Chapter 461
Ophelia froze, unable to move, caught off guard by how his deep voice made her heart flutter.
She could feel this was different, he wasn’t joking around or putting on an act. This time, he really meant it.
Ophelia’s brows knitted slightly, her voice growing softer and more serious. “Alaric, what’s wrong? Did something happen?”
She couldn’t imagine any other reason, she’d never seen him like this before. He just seemed so… vulnerable.
‘That’s it. Right now, he just feels so fragile to me, Ophelia thought.
‘He must be facing something really hard, and it’s dragging him down,’ she thought.
Alaric took a deep breath, his gaze lingering on Ophelia. Just as she was waiting for his answer, he suddenly rolled over and pinned her beneath him, sounding all wounded and pitiful. “I haven’t seen you in days. I really missed you.”
Ophelia’s lips twitched hard, and she instantly felt even more exasperated.
‘I really shouldn’t have felt sorry for him. Damn him, always teasing me, she thought.
She pushed Alaric away, her voice sharp with warning. “Mr. Caldwell, if you don’t need my treatment, I’ll just go back to Dunhollow. I’m busy, you know.”
‘Fine, if you don’t care about your health, I’m not sticking around, she thought..
Alaric could tell she was really mad this time, so he finally stopped messing around.
He leaned down and gave her a quick peck on the lips, then let her go right away.
For one thing, he didn’t want this girl to really bristle and blow up at him.
For another, if he went in for a real kiss, he knew he wouldn’t be able to hold back.
Truth was, he missed her like crazy. Even while he was unconscious these past few days, all he did was dream about her, she was the only thing in his dreams.
Ophelia was just about to let loose on him, but Alaric had already gotten up and out of her reach. Her anger was left hanging, nowhere to go, and she just felt totally stuck.
She ground her teeth, eyes narrowing at Alaric, giving him a look that promised trouble.
Alaric felt a cold sweat break out on his scalp. ‘Uh oh, looks like I really ticked her off this time, he thought.
“Ophelia, it hurts right here,” Alaric said dramatically, clutching his chest and putting on his most pitiful face.
Ophelia took a deep breath, and when she saw how pale he looked, she forced herself to swallow her anger.
“Lie down,” Ophelia ordered, her eyes cold and stern.
E
She knew that if she showed even the slightest bit of softness, this guy would immediately start pushing his luck again.
For once, Alaric didn’t put up a fight and just let her do her thing. His usually sharp eyes were lowered, lost in thought.
Seeing he was silent, Ophelia shook her head.
After a moment, she grumbled under her breath, “All this just for a business deal, and you nearly got yourself killed.”
