Chapter 496
“Spill it first, or dinner’s off,” Ophelia said as she walked toward him.
His voice was weighed down with worry, but he still tried to act like nothing was wrong. ‘Who’s he kidding?’ Ophelia thought.
George froze for a second, not expecting Ophelia to call him out on it, even though he’d tried his best to keep it hidden.
Ophelia had put it that way on purpose. She knew if she didn’t give him a nudge, George would probably just keep quiet.
But for him to have come all the way here and still not be able to say what was on his mind…
‘Was it something really bad, or just too messy to talk about?’ Ophelia wondered.
They were friends, no way she was just going to sit back and watch. She really hoped he’d come clean.
The distance between them shrank, but the silence hung heavy in the air.
Ophelia watched him, waiting for him to say something, but George just looked torn, still caught up in his own indecision.
While they were both lost in thought, neither of them noticed four figures closing in from different directions, each with a dangerous glint in their eyes.
Suddenly, a flash of light streaked past Ophelia’s eyes. She dodged on instinct, and a shiny blade swiped right past her face.
“Who the hell are you?” Ophelia barked, already fighting back.
But there were four of them, all moving like trained fighters, each armed with a knife.
Ophelia dodged one attacker, kicked another away, but she couldn’t evade the one closing in from behind.
Just as the knife was about to sink into her back, George didn’t even hesitate, he stepped in and shoved her out of the way.
His hand got sliced open, but he didn’t even care about his own injury, just checking to see if Ophelia was hurt.
But in his rush to protect Ophelia, he left himself wide open…
George let out a muffled grunt, trying to keep it in. Ophelia instinctively turned to him. “What’s wrong?”
She hadn’t seen what happened, but the look on his face told her something was seriously off.
“I’m fine,” George gritted out, trying to act tough. But the moment he looked up, his expression changed in an instant, someone was lunging at Ophelia from behind, knife raised. He shouted, “Watch out!”
He tried to help, but barely managed a single step before crashing to the ground, his injury taking him out.
As Ophelia was about to be struck, George’s eyes went wild with panic. He struggled to get up, but his body wouldn’t cooperate, blood was soaking through his shirt, but he didn’t even notice.

At the same time, Ophelia sensed the danger and twisted to dodge, but it was hopeless. She threw up her arm to block, and the blade slashed a cut across her forearm.
Ophelia gritted her teeth against the pain and tried to move in, but before she could, someone stepped between her and the attackers, blocking the danger and shielding her with his own body.
She looked up, her lips curling into a weak, relieved smile. “Alaric.”
‘Thank god, it’s him. We’re gonna be okay now, Ophelia thought, feeling a wave of relief wash over her.
