Chapter 98
Chapter 98
When Ophelia turned to check on Ella again, she saw her fidgeting nervously, looking like she wished the ground would swallow her up.
She gave her shoulder a reassuring pat and whispered, “Don’t be nervous. Just sit down and keep eating.
With that, Ophelia slipped over to the next table and took a seat.
“Waiter,” Ophelia called out. “I’d like to order.”
“Sure thing,” the waiter replied, but as he approached Ophelia, he looked a bit confused.
‘Wait, isn’t this the same customer from the other table?’ he thought to himself.
“What a coincidence. You here all by yourself, Ophelia?” Alaric said, sliding into the seat across from her.
Ophelia glanced up and gave a careless shrug. “Guess so. Pretty random, huh,” she said.
On the outside, she looked calm, but inside, she was freaking out.
She really hadn’t expected to run into Alaric here. ‘He didn’t see me with Ella, did he?’ she wondered anxiously.
Alaric raised an eyebrow, a teasing smirk in his eyes. “Why do I get the feeling you’re hinting I picked the worst possible moment to show up?”
“Not exactly,” Ophelia said with a forced smile, bluntly adding, “What I mean is, you shouldn’t have shown up at all.”
If he hadn’t barged in out of nowhere, she’d be enjoying a feast with Ella right now.
But to keep Alaric from catching on, she didn’t even risk a glance at Ella.
Ella was quietly demolishing the food, trying to blend into the background, but she couldn’t help eavesdropping on the conversation at the next table.
Who could have resisted a bit of gossip? It was just human nature.
Without even noticing, she was practically leaning toward their table.
Alaric’s icy gaze swept over, making Ella nearly choke on her food.
After a brief moment of panic, she sat up straight, then sprang to her feet and blurted out, “Waiter, check!”
With that, she practically stumbled her way to the cashier, trying to play it cool but failing miserably.
‘Note to self: save the gossip for a better time. I almost got busted just now,’ Ella thought, cheeks burning with embarrassment.
Alaric just gave Ella a quick look, then shifted his focus back to Ophelia, clearly done paying attention to her.
Ophelia was totally lost in the menu, hard to tell if she even noticed what just happened or just didn’t care at all.
Alaric arched a brow, but his usual smile was back in a flash as he grabbed the menu. “Can’t make up your mind, huh? Let me pick something for you, Ophelia.”
“Who says I can’t decide?” Ophelia shot Alaric a sharp look, clearly annoyed.
Alaric smirked, teasing, “So why have you been staring at the menu for ages and still haven’t picked a single thing? Is nothing here good enough for you?”
Ophelia bit her lip. ‘Was I really that easy to read?’ she wondered.
Of course, she wasn’t about to admit it. She just arched an eyebrow and rolled her eyes at him. “Maybe it’s because you showed up out of nowhere and totally ruined my appetite.”
Alaric couldn’t help but laugh at her comeback. ‘This girl really knows how to talk back, he thought.
“Alright, dinner’s on me. Think of it as me making it up to you,” Alaric said, then started ordering, making sure to pick all the things Ophelia liked.
“Don’t you have anything better to do, Mr. Caldwell?” Ophelia asked, her tone dripping with sarcasm. ‘Seriously, did he just show up here on purpose to bump into me?’ she thought.
Alaric just leaned back, looking completely relaxed. “No rush. Having dinner with you won’t make me late for anything,” he replied.
