Chapter 99

Chapter 99

“Go on, eat. When we’re done, I’ll take you home,” Alaric said with a playful smile.

Ophelia looked up at him and blurted, “Didn’t you just say you had something to do?”

Right after she said it, regret washed over her. ‘Why did I even say that?’ she scolded herself.

‘Ugh, did that make it sound like I actually want him to take me home?’ she thought, mortified.

Alaric’s eyes sparkled with amusement, a smug look on his face as he said, “You come first. I can take you home before anything else.”

Ophelia shot him a dramatic eye roll, her expression full of disdain. “Don’t bother. I doubt I matter to you in any way, Mr. Caldwell.”

Alaric just shook his head with a helpless smile. He clearly wasn’t surprised by her attitude and simply told her, “Just eat.” Ophelia took a deep breath, trying to steady herself, then picked up her fork.

If leaving abruptly wouldn’t have made him suspicious, she honestly wouldn’t have stuck around for dinner.

Noticing Ophelia seemed a bit distracted, Alaric casually asked, “What’s on your mind?”

Ophelia snapped back to attention and glanced at him. “No need for you to know what I’m thinking, Mr. Caldwell.”

“Wow, ruthless as always,” Alaric sighed, putting on a wounded look. “Come on, we’re fiancés. Aren’t we supposed to lean on each other for stuff like this?”

Ophelia felt a headache coming on. ‘Ugh, he’s acting up again, she thought.

Gritting her teeth, a sly glint flashed in Ophelia’s eyes as she looked at Alaric. “You really want to know?” she said then.

Alaric’s lips curled into a barely noticeable smirk as he nodded. “Go ahead, Ophelia. I’m all ears.”

“Alright then,” Ophelia said, a playful glint in her eyes and a breezy tone. “I was just thinking, maybe I should go see Grandpa soon and talk about breaking off our engagement.

“If you’re up for it, Mr. Caldwell, you can tag along. I’m sure it’ll go even smoother with you there.”

Alaric rubbed his temples. He’d braced himself for Ophelia to say something wild, but he never thought she’d drop a bomb like this.

‘She really never stops scheming to get rid of me, does she?’ he thought.

Since Alaric didn’t say anything, Ophelia pressed on. “So, Mr. Caldwell, when are you free? How about tomorrow?”

“If it’s a date you’re after, I’m always game. But breaking off our engagement? Sorry, that’s not happening,” Alaric replied, totally unfazed. ‘No way am I letting this girl slip away, he thought.

Ophelia just shrugged, a helpless look on her face. “Looks like I’ll have to figure it out myself.”

She’d only brought it up to test the waters, but with Alaric so dead set against it, she was clearly on her own, and that was definitely going to be a headache.

Alaric’s lips twitched. ‘Man, what did I ever do to make her think so badly of me?’ he wondered, feeling a bit helpless.

Ophelia didn’t seem bothered at all. She quickly regained her composure, her usual calm look settling back in.

After dinner, Ophelia turned to Alaric and said politely, “Thanks for dinner, Mr. Caldwell. It’s getting late, so I’ll head home

now.”

She was clearly making it obvious she didn’t want him to take her home, so Alaric had no choice but to back off.

Outside the restaurant, Alaric watched as Ophelia got into a cab and left. Only then did he get into his own car.

“Mr. Caldwell, Mr. Campbell is already here,” Ryan said quietly.

“Mm,” Alaric replied, leaning back in his seat, his usual aloof and distinguished air settling back in.
