Denise POV

I chose the third row, I was close to the front but far enough to avoid unwarranted attention from the

lecturer.

The lecture hall gradually became fuller. Someone across the aisle was fiddling with pens on his table. A man in the second row was reading something on his phone with the guilty expression of someone who knew better.

Nobody paid me any mind. I simply sat with my book open and was nothing else except a student.

The professor came in without preamble.

She was a woman in her fifties who had mounted that podium more times than she could count. She dropped her books, stared at the lecture hall for some seconds and wrote the topic on the board behind

her.

She faced us and began. “Financial structures are designed around the management of risk, access, and control of money.”

I stared at the note.

I had been working with the foundation, recently the investments and inheritance management that the marriage gave me access to. I had always thought about them as nothing but frameworks but what she suggested was every financial arrangement contained assumptions about who should have access, who should bear risk, and who gets to define the terms.

I thought about the original contract and the foundation, and the annotations Callum had walked me through.

My lecturer thought of them as questions when I had been viewing them as answers.

She presented a case study of a charity and the conditions under which its capital became restricted. She asked if the restriction served the donor’s intent or the institution’s convenience.

I raised my hand before I’d fully decided to. “The case study assumes the donor’s intent was clear. Foundations are designed to be ambiguous so they can adapt to changes. So the question becomes who challenges the various interpretation of the foundation when the occasion rises?”

She studied me carefully. “That is exactly the right question. What’s your name?”

“Denise.”

“Denise. I want to you find out who currently lacks that standing and why.”

She moved on. I noted the assignment down and a warm feeling spread through me as I grinned.

I was still writing someone beside me. “I’ve been thinking about the standing issue for two weeks and still can’t figure it out.”

She introduced herself as Priya and told me some students were thinking of forming a study group.

“Would you like to join?”

I said yes without thinking about it before I realized what I did.

Priya gave me her contact details and said she’d send the details of the group and meeting info before leaving. I watched her as she left.

It wasn’t so long ago that I had to carry out myriad analyses in my head before I agreed to something.

I smiled because once upon a time that “yes” used to cost more than it just did.

I saw Rosaline’s missed call on the way out and called her back from the steps of the building. She answered immediately when I called back.

She asked me to tell her how it went. I told her about the lecture and the assignment she gave me.

“That’s wonderful. She does sound formidable.” Rosaline said and meant it.

“She is.”

“Good. You need it.”

There was a small shift in her voice that.communicated the shift in the conversation dynamics. “Now about grandchildren. When am I expecting them?”

“Rosaline.”

“I’m just having a conversation.”

“You have this particular one every three days.”

She was completely unbothered. ” Because nothing has changed. Perhaps if you had a timeline-”

“There is no timeline.”

“That can be arranged.”

“Roseline, I’m going to end this call.”

“I’m your mother-in-law. You can’t end the-”

I laughed. It wasn’t the a restrained chuckle but the full unbridled, belly aching version.

I recovered, “I love you but I’m ending the call.”

“Fine. But think about-”

I ended it; I stood for a moment longer and just took it in.
