Not a minute before, not a minute after-and I understood immediately that this was not coincidence but character. The black car pulled up to the curb outside my building with the quiet precision of someone who considered punctuality a form of respect, and the driver opened the door before I’d fully descended the front steps.
I had worn the dark green dress.
Kieran was already inside, seated with the particular stillness of large men who had learned not to fill every space they occupied. He was taller than I remembered from the business function where we’d first met-or perhaps it was simply that I was looking at him differently now, without the ambient noise of a room full of people and the particular distraction of Dante’s hand at the small of my back, marking me in the way he marked things he considered his. Kieran had dark hair, grey eyes that were more attentive than they first appeared, and the kind of face that gave away very little unless it chose to. He was not conventionally beautiful the way Dante was-Dante’s looks were arranged by nature for maximum impact, like a landscape designed to stop you in your tracks. Kieran’s face was more like a room you kept noticing details in.
He looked at me when I got in with an expression that was appraising without being intrusive.
“You came,” he said.
“I said I would.”
“People say things.”
“I do what I say.” I settled into the seat and the driver closed the door behind me. “Where are we going?”
“Seren.”
I knew the name. Everyone in the upper tiers of pack society knew the name, the same way you knew the names of places you’d never been and had no practical reason to expect to be. Seren was the kind of restaurant that existed in a specific stratum of the world—not the stratum I came from, not the stratum I’d been quietly borrowing access to for four years through Dante’s card and Dante’s world and Dante’s particular willingness to keep me close as

long as I stayed invisible.
“I’ve heard of it,” I said.
“Have you been?”
“No.”

He nodded once, like this confirmed something rather than surprised him, and said nothing else. We rode in silence for most of the journey, and it was not an uncomfortable silence-it was the silence of two people who were both thinking and had agreed, without discussion, not to fill the air with things that didn’t need to be said yet.
I looked out the window and ran through what I knew about Kieran Nightshade, which was both more and less than I’d have liked. Alpha of the Moonlight Pack, one of the most established packs in the region, with territory that bordered two major trade routes and a council seat that had belonged to his bloodline for three generations. Thirty-four years old, unmated-which at his status and age was the detail everyone noticed first, because an unmated Alpha of his standing was a question that demanded an answer. His parents were still living, both from old lines, with the particular investment in legacy that old lines always had. He’d built Moonlight Enterprises from a modest inherited portfolio into something considerably larger over the past seven years, which suggested he was either very intelligent or very ruthless or, most likely, both.
He had approached me at a business function eight months ago with the kind of directness that didn’t leave room for misreading. Not flirtatious-specific. He had said he’d been watching how I worked, how I moved through a room, how I managed the invisible labor of keeping other people comfortable while maintaining my own composure. He’d said he had a proposal that might interest me. He’d given me his private number and told me to call when I was ready.
I had blocked the number the same night, because I was still in the thick of believing that Dante would eventually make a choice that included me.
I’d unblocked it the day I stood at the curb watching him walk away from a burning car.
Seren was everything its reputation suggested.
The elevator opened onto a floor that felt like a different city-quieter, warmer, with the particular acoustic quality of rooms built to contain private conversations. Dark wood and low light and the smell of something expensive being prepared somewhere out of sight. The maître d’ knew Kieran by name and by title, and we were led through the main dining room to a table near a partition of frosted glass that offered both a view and a degree of separation
