I got to the penthouse with a steeled mind but nothing could have prepared me for what I met at the house.
The house was brimming with a nervous and frantic energy. There were screens and security surveillance gadgets mounted on every surface. The air was heavy with the sound of systems chimes and movement of people going from screen to screen with that hurried gait. James was directing traffic near the kitchen with a voice too low to carry as he had a phone pressed to his hear.
My senses were overwhelmed with the information the room was bombarding it with. I had seen Kieran become dangerous, lethal even when he was provoked beyond the point of reasoning but I had never seen this: the house itself holding its breath around the fact that his mate was missing.
James came in a few minutes later with Eli on his hip.
There was a detached fury on his face. He handed the boy to me before I thought about reaching him. “He’s been asking for Kieran.”
I didn’t hesitate. My arms were already open and he came to me. He was clutching something in his fist but it was too tiny to make out. Must be a toy or a keepsake.
I looked at his face: it was quiet and tear stained, with a blank stare in his eyes. I knew that look, even adults carried it often: the haunted expression that arrives when the body had passed its limit of crying.
Before now, Eli was simply a concept that I had spent weeks thinking about in terms of lineage, succession to the pack royalty and the complications he represented for my son’s marriage. Holding him know, he was just a frightened toddler who wanted his father to reassure him everything was going to be fine.
Sounds from a television picked up. One of the pack channels was broadcasting the Livestream while condemning it. Anything to get the ratings up these days. I

paid it mind as I focused my attention on Eli who was leaning his head against my shoulder.
Eli turned his head toward the screen after some minutes and very still. “Mama.”
I froze for half a second before I understood what he’d seen. I finally turned to the television. It was the frame of Alyssa restrained and tied to a bomb, the countdown ticking ominously along the bottom of the frame.
Everything I knew about Alyssa Stone went out of my head: the Silvermoon Connection, the Warnings I had given Kieran about what her presence meant for his rule and family. None of it mattered anymore. The only that mattered was a child seeing something that no child should ever see.
His whimpering became a fully fledged cry before I could do anything about it. His whole body shook as he reached out to the screen like he could touch it.
“Mama.” His distorted from crying, left marks of pain in my chest.
I pulled him closer and held his back as I cradled his head, the same way I did for my children when they were his age. It was more muscle memory than anything else. I didn’t reassure him because there was nothing to guarantee and I wasn’t going to lie to a frightened child just to buy his momentary comfort.
“It’s okay. I’ve got you.” I said instead, which was the only honest thing I had to offer.
While I held him, I kept watching the screen over his head. I thought about everything I had told Kieran especially my warnings about the threat Alyssa posed to him. I had been so certain of that but now, holding her son while she fought for her life on live television, the certainty I’d carried into this house an hour ago felt suddenly much less solid than it had.
What kind of woman plans her own kidnapping? Yes I knew people could do crazy things when they were desperate enough but voluntarily placing herself in a situation that left her child alone on a pavement with strangers? I couldn’t see it no matter how much I wanted to.
Eli’s crying slowly shifted into something quieter, exhausted hiccups between

words, and eventually, through the last of it, he managed a full sentence. “Papa went to get Mama.”
I looked down at him. He wasn’t asking or hoping. He was certain; there was an edge to his voice that wasn’t there before. His world was simple and followed a clean sense of logic: Mama was in danger. Papa knew. Papa went.
To him, Kieran wasn’t an old mistake or a threat to the bloodline or a complication to be managed. He was Papa and he had gone to save Mama.
I turned back to the television. The counter showed over two hours. Kieran had two hours to decide who he was going to save and who he was going to condemn to death. I felt a shiver run down my spine. The news anchor kept giving their opinions and theories about the footage without any regard for the way it affected the people close to it.
The show must go on, I suppose. My mind went to Kieran who I knew was probably on his way to that building. My heart almost broke at the thought of Denise being restrained beside a woman I had spent weeks warning my son against.
I had told him to do everything to protect his family without giving a thought to the cost of that charge. I never stopped to ask whether the cost included the boy currently settling into exhausted stillness against my shoulder.
