DENISE

The silence that followed was very still.

I looked at him across the table-this man I barely knew, who had watched me from a distance and decided I was worth a direct approach, who had laid out his offer with the clean directness of someone who respected the other person enough not to dress the transaction in false

romance.

“How did you know about the car?” I asked.

“I have people in this city,” he said simply. “And I was paying attention.”

I thought about what that meant-that somewhere in the days between the accident and this table, he had known. That he had let me make the call in my own time. That he hadn’t pushed, hadn’t leveraged it, hadn’t shown up at my door.

He had waited.

“I have one condition,” I said.

“Tell me.”

“The children at St. Mira’s.” I said it directly, because it was the thing I most needed to protect and the one I was most afraid to name. “The orphanage where I grew up. They need consistent support-operational funding, not charity, something structured. That’s part of whatever agreement we make. It’s not negotiable.”

He didn’t

pause.

“Done.”

“You didn’t ask for details.”

“Tell me the details and I’ll make sure they’re handled correctly. But my answer isn’t conditional on the details.” He looked at me with the grey eyes that gave away only what they chose to. “You come from somewhere, Denise. I’m not interested in a Luna who doesn’t.”

Something shifted in me then-not dramatically, not the kind of shift that came with a wave of feeling or a revelation. Something quieter. The adjustment of weight being distributed differently, the rebalancing that happened when something you’d been carrying on one side was finally, carefully, moved to a more sustainable position.

I had told Dante once-one of the few times I’d been honest enough with him to say it plainly -that what I wanted was to matter. Not to be kept. Not to be managed. To matter, in the way that meant people considered your presence before making decisions, your absence before making choices.

He had kissed my temple and redirected the conversation.

Kieran Nightshade had just agreed to fund an orphanage without asking for the budget.

“I’ll do it,” I said.

He nodded once, without triumph, without the particular satisfaction of a man who had gotten what he wanted. Just the acknowledgment of a decision made.

“There are logistics to discuss,” he said. “Timeline, public announcement, the order of introductions—my parents first, then the council. I’d want the mating ceremony within three months if that’s manageable for

you.”

“It’s manageable.”

“You’ll want legal representation before we formalize anything. Independent, not pack- affiliated. Someone who works only for you.”

I looked at him. “You’re telling me to get my own lawyer for a contract with you.”

“I’m telling you to protect yourself correctly,” he said. “You should have someone in corner who isn’t in mine. That’s how this works if it’s going to work honestly.”

I was quiet for a moment.

“You’re going to be very difficult to distrust,” I said.

Now he did smile-properly, the full version, which changed his face in a way that was interesting. “Good,” he said. “That’s the intention.”

The food arrived, and we ate, and the conversation moved into logistics and practicalities with the comfortable efficiency of two people who were both accustomed to making decisions and had agreed to make this one together. He asked questions and listened to the answers. I asked questions and he gave me complete ones. We disagreed about the timeline for the public announcement-he wanted sooner, I wanted enough time to disentangle properly from my current situation-and negotiated a middle position that satisfied both of us without either of us having to concede something essential.

At some point I became aware that I was not performing anything.
