Chapter 39

DANTE

I had spent the drive to the Grand Aldric constructing a version of the evening that was manageable.

Elena beside me in the car, her hand in mine, talking about the decorations she’d heard the Silvermoon staff had arranged, the people who’d confirmed attendance, the particular social significance of certain families sending senior representatives rather than younger ones. I listened with appropriate attention and contributed the right responses and behind all of it ran the paralle! processing of a man who had been managing complex situations for long enough that it had become structural.

The evening required certain things from me. Presence, composure, the public performance of an Alpha moving forward into his correct future. Richard Silvermoon had arranged this partly as celebration and partly as demonstration-a show of Silver Creek’s standing, of the alliance being formalized, of the Blackwood and Silvermoon names being publicly joined before the ceremony

made it official.

I needed to be exactly what the evening required.

I had been telling myself this since Marcus Webb had called at seven that morning to tell me that Denise had been released from the fourth precinct the previous night, that the charges were being reviewed in light of security footage inconsistencies, that someone had arranged representation for her with a speed and quality that Marcus, who was not easily impressed, had described as significant.

Significant.

I had turned that word over for several hours before arriving at the shape of what it meant.

Someone had moved faster than me. Someone with resources at least equivalent to mine, with connections at the precinct that operated through different channels than the ones I used, with the specific motivation to have her out of that cell before morning.

I had not yet confirmed the name attached to that someone.

I didn’t need to.

The Grand Aldric was at full attendance when we arrived-the entrance hall dense with the social architecture of a significant pack event, faces I’d known for years arranged in the configurations of people who had long relationships and longer memories. I moved through it the way I moved through everything, with the ease of belonging, and Elena moved beside me with the same ease, and the room responded to us the way rooms responded when two things that were supposed to be together finally were.

Richard Silvermoon found us within the first ten minutes, in the better mood that public display seemed to produce in him-the satisfaction of a man whose arrangements were going according to plan.

“Dante.” The handshake of an ally. “Elena tells me the ceremony details are coming together.”

“On schedule,” I said.

“Good.” He looked around the room with the proprietary satisfaction of a host. “Good turnout. The Nightshade family sent representatives-the parents are upstairs in the private salon.” He said it with the slight edge of a man noting something he found mildly irritating but had decided to process as acceptable. “Whatever their feelings about our families’ history, their attendance is

noted.”

+said something appropriate.

Lyra appeared at my teft with a glass of wine and the expression of someone who had been enjoying the evening and intended to continue doing so.

Everything, in this precise configuration, was as expected.

And then the room changed.

I felt it before I tracked the cause–the particular shift of collective attention, the way a hundred small conversations adjusted their direction without announcement. I turned toward the staircase because the staircase was the origin point of whatever had shifted, and I saw her.

The dress was extraordinary. That was the first thing-not because I was cataloguing her appearance, but because the dress did something that made not noticing it an act of deliberate effort that I wasn’t managing. Deep, moving color, architectural in its structure, the kind of piece that cost what it cost and made no effort to obscure the fact. She wore it with the absolute composure of someone who had been born to things like this, which she had not been, which meant she had become something, and the becoming was entirely her own.

She came down the staircase with Jayce Talis.

Jayce Talis.

The name arrived with its full implications and I processed them in the space of approximately two seconds while keeping my face completely still, which was the hardest thing I had done in recent memory.

Jayce Talis, who had been Kieran Nightshade’s closest associate for eleven years. Who went nowhere professionally or socially without it reflecting Kieran Nightshade’s interests. Who was currently escorting Denise down the main staircase of the Grand Aldric in a dress that cost more than most people’s monthly salary.

She looked across the room.

Found us-found me–with the directness of someone who had known exactly where to look.

And raised her hand.

The wave was small and unhurried and accompanied by a smile that knew, with complete and devastating precision, what it was doing.

I had two seconds before my face did something public. I spent both of them on control.

Beside me, Lyra made a sound that was not quite a word.

Elena said, very quietly: “Dante.”
