“Let me explain something to you,” I said quietly. “What I wanted two years ago is not the currency you get to spend tonight. That account is closed.” I kept my eyes on his. “You don’t get to table an offer that was relevant two years ago as though the two years didn’t happen. As though the car didn’t happen, and the hospital, and the police station.” I paused. “And Elena.”
His expression shifted.
“Speaking of Elena.” I kept my voice at the same even register. “I want you to think very carefully about something.” I tilted my head slightly. “You’ve been building the story of the devoted Alpha who waited four years for his true love. The pack has been celebrating it. The comment sections, the photographs, the narrative.” I looked at him. “While you were with me, Dante, where exactly was Elena?”
Something changed in his face.
“She was married,” I continued. “For four years. To someone else. In those four years, the marriage ended. Which means at some point it became something worth ending.” I let that sit. “I don’t know what Elena’s marriage looked like on the inside. But I think-” I paused, “I think you might want to ask yourself whether the devotion story runs in both directions. Whether Elena, who is smart, who has been watching this room tonight with the eyes of a woman doing significant internal mathematics–whether she knows more about the gap between the story and the reality than she’s currently showing.”
Dante’s face had gone very still.
“I think she suspects,” I said. “I think she’s suspected for a while. And I think she’s making her own calculations the same way we all make calculations when we’re in situations that require them.” I met his eyes. “But that’s between you and Elena. It has nothing to do with me. Not anymore.”
“You don’t know-”
“Let go of my hand,” I said. “This is the last time I’m going to say it before my voice gets louder.”
He was looking at me with something that was not the calculation-it was underneath the calculation, the thing the calculation usually covered. Something that had the quality of a man standing at the edge of an understanding he’d been avoiding and finding the edge closer than he’d thought.
His grip didn’t loosen.
And then it did.
Not because I’d won the argument. Because from somewhere behind my left shoulder, I felt a shift in the air-the particular displacement of someone arriving with purpose-and then a hand settled at my waist.
Not grabbing. Not possessive in the way that demanded something. Just settled there, warm and certain, with the ease of someone who was exactly where they intended to be.
Jayce Talis stood at my side with the pleasant expression of a man attending a party and happening to come and stand next to someone he knew.
He said nothing.

He didn’t need to.
The hand at my waist said everything that the situation required-not the announcement I’d asked not to make, not a title or a formal declaration, but something else. The particular, visible, unmistakable statement of a person who mattered enough that someone moved across a room to be beside them.
Dante looked at Jayce’s hand.
Then at Jayce.
Then at me.
Something happened in his face that I didn’t examine because it wasn’t mine to examine anymore.
“You should focus on getting your sister out,” I said pleasantly. “She’s been processed now. I have a feeling her release is going to be considerably more complicated than mine was.” I considered this. “The misrepresentation claim she made-publicly, about an invitation issued by a founding pack family-that particular charge has its own procedural requirements that don’t respond well to social standing or private appeals.” I tilted my head slightly. “She’s good at creating situations. Less experienced at sitting in them.”
Dante said nothing.
“The investors from yesterday are also still here tonight,” I added, because I was thorough. “The ones who were in the corridor when I went down. They’ve been watching this evening with considerable interest.” I kept my expression pleasant. “You have a lot of things that need your attention right now, Dante. I’m not one of them”
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he looked at Jayce once more-a look that contained several things, all of them controlled, none of them resolved.
Then he straightened his jacket and walked back into the main salon.
I watched him go.
Jayce’s hand remained at my waist for a moment after, a deliberate beat, and then settled back to his side.
“Timing?” I said.
“Kieran watches the room,” Jayce said simply. “When he can’t do it himself, I do it for him.”
I nodded.
We stood quietly for a moment, looking out at the party through the glass panels-the beautiful, gilded, intricate machinery of it, all the people doing what people did in these rooms, which was to manage and position and calculate and occasionally, in the gaps between all of it, to feel something real.
“He’s going to try to get Lyra out tonight,” I said.
“He’ll find it difficult,” Jayce said. “The Nightshade family’s legal representation filed paperwork on the misrepresentation claim forty minutes ago. The process is formal now. It doesn’t respond to informal pressure.”
“Kieran moved fast.”
“He generally does.” A pause. “How are your ribs?”
