Tokyo had resolved the way these things resolved when you applied the right pressure in the right order-the investor had been managed, the concern had been addressed, the relationship had been preserved. I had been professional and thorough and completely present in every meeting, which had required a sustained act of will because underneath all these professionals thorougness that I had been putting in all aspects of this work, trying to rectify the issues with our investors and put them back on track, I had been thinking about other things as well.

I landed home on a Thursday morning and went directly to the office.

Marcus Webb was waiting for me at eleven.

He came into my office with the expression he used when the news required careful delivery-not bad news exactly, but news that needed to be delivered gently.

“The footage,” he said, once he was seated.

“Tell me.”

“It’s clear.” He set a folder on the desk. “The corridor camera on the fourth floor captured the full sequence. Arrival timestamps, positioning, the physical contact initiated by Cyrus Silvermoon, and Denise’s response.” He paused. “In that order. Unambiguously.”.

I looked at the folder without opening it.

“The assault charge Cyrus filed,” Marcus continued, “is collapsing. His legal team has seen the footage. They’re aware that proceeding to any formal hearing means the footage becomes/part of the public record, which means the sequence becomes public record.” Another pause.

“They’re looking for a quiet withdrawal.”

“And the counter-filing?”

Marcus’s expression adjusted slightly. “Submitted twelve days ago. Precise documentation-medical records from her hospital admission, the footage timestamps, witness accounts from three Blackwood Enterprises staff members who were in the adjacent area.” He looked at me steadily.

“The representation is thorough. Unusually thorough.”

“The firm,” I said.

“Aldren and Associates.” He kept his eyes on mine. “They have three offices. One here, one in the capital, one in-”

“Nightshade territory,” I said.

“Their primary corporate client for the past seven years,” Marcus confirmed. “Yes.”

I sat back.

Hooked at the window behind Marcus’s head, at the city that had been doing its business while I was in Tokyo managing an investor and my sister’s consequences and the surface of things.

Someone else had been building, with quiet and methodical precision, while I was managing the surface.

“There’s one more thing,” Marcus said.

I waited.

“The Grand Aldric incident. Lyra’s misrepresentation claim.” He opened the folder to a specific page. “The formal complaint filed by the Nightshade family’s legal team is documented and dated. The hotel’s management has cooperated fully with the process.” A pause. “Your sister’s release was processed on a personal recognizance arrangement, but the complaint itself remains on record. It doesn’t go away because she’s out.”

“I know,” I said.

‘It creates ongoing exposure,” he said carefully. “For the Blackwood name. Given the current-given the timing, with the mating ceremony scheduled-”

‘I know, Marcus.”

He closed the folder and left it on the desk and stood. “I’ll keep monitoring the counter-filing progress. If Cyrus’s team moves to withdraw formally, I’ll let you know within the hour.”

He left.

sat in my office with the folder on the desk and the city behind the window and the full shape of what Kieran Nightshade had built around Denise while I was looking in other directions.

had thought it was a stunt. I had stood in a party and watched and told myself she was throwing a scene, making a point, that she would come back around when she’d made whatever she needed to make.

had been wrong.

Elena was quiet at dinner.

This was not unusual in itself-Elena was often quiet, in a way that I had always found restful. But this quiet was different in a way I egistered before I identified why.

Her usual quiet was present. She was in the room with you, thinking something, which was okay, because she still had you and made sure to acknowledge that.

Tonight she was somewhere else,

She ate the dinner and asked me a question about Tokyo and listened to the answer with the right attention, and smiled at the right moment, and refilled her water glass when it was empty. All of it correct. All of it still rubbed me off in an odd way, as I tried to get to the bottom of things.

I watched her across the table and tried to locate what was different.

“Are you alright?” I asked.

She looked at me. The smile that came was immediate and warm and reached her eyes.

It was not a smile I had seen on her before.

“I’m fine,” she said. “Tired from the shopping. The fourth shop took the longest.”

“Did you find anything?”

“Not yet.” She picked up her water glass. “It takes as long as takes.”

We finished dinner.

She went to bed before me, which was not unusual. I sat in the study with the Tokyo documents that still needed final filing and worked through them, trying not to let it compile, since I had nothing more important that I was doing at the moment.

At eleven o’clock I turned off the desk lamp and went to bed.

Elena was asleep, or appeared to be. I lay in the dark and looked at the ceiling and thought about Marcus Webb’s folder and the counter-filing timestamps and the smile I had never seen before, and the thoughts didn’t arrange themselves into anything useful or conclusive.

I slept badly.

The envelope was on my desk in the morning.

Not delivered through the usual channels, it was simply there, on my desk the next day when I turned up at seven thirty am, ready to start the work for the day.

My name on the front. No return address. No postage.

I stood beside my desk and looked at it for a moment.
