Chapter 52
KIERAN
She was standing on the pavement exactly where she’d said she was.

I saw her from half a block away-coat pulled close, phone in her hand, standing with the particular stillness of someone who had decided to be exactly where they were rather than pacing or moving. The afternoon light was doing something cold and flat around her and she looked, from this distance, entirely composed.
pulled up in front of her and she got in before I’d fully stopped.
She closed the door. Settled into the seat. Looked ahead.
pulled back into traffic..
The question I wanted to ask was present and available and I looked at it from several angles in the first thirty seconds and decided o leave it where it was. She had been in Dante’s car. She had gotten out of it at a red light and sent me her location. The sequence old me most of what I needed and the rest-the specific content of whatever had happened in that car-was hers to offer when she :hose to offer it.
Finding out that she’d been tracked by Jayce’s contacts was not a conversation I wanted to have today. She had spent four years in in arrangement where someone monitored her movements as a matter of course. I was not interested in being the next version of hat, regardless of the intention behind it.
stayed quiet and drove.
After a moment she said, without turning her head: “When did you get back?”
This afternoon,” I said. “The deal wrapped yesterday. I took the early flight.”
She nodded. “The Tokyo thing-it went well?”
‘Well enough. Some council dynamics shifted while I was there. I’ll brief you on it when you’re not-” I paused. “When you have nore bandwidth.”
She looked at me then, briefly. Something in her expression adjusted.
‘I’m fine,” she said.
‘I know,” I said. “I didn’t say you weren’t,”
A pause.
“How was the dress shopping?” I asked.
Something in her posture shifted–not quite relaxing, but the deliberate loosening of a person choosing to let one thing go before picking up another.
“Stressful,” she said. “And good. Both at the same time.” A beat. “Your mother has strong opinions about necklines.”

*She has strong opinions about everything.”
“She’s right about the necklines though.” She looked out the window. “We went to four shops. Nothing was exactly right but the fourth one was the closest.”
“There’s no deadline,” I said. “If it takes twenty shops, it takes twenty shops.”
“Your mother doesn’t operate on that timeline.”
“My mother operates on whatever timeline she decides is correct and then makes the world adjust to it.” I changed lanes. “If you want something custom made, I can arrange it. There are designers who work privately-no shop appointments, they come to you, they build around what you want rather than what they have available.”
She was quiet for a moment.
“Wait on that,” she said. “I want to find it the normal way first.”
“Then we find it the normal way.” I glanced at her. “I can come with you, if that’s useful. To the next round.”
She looked at me with an expression I couldn’t fully read-something that had both assessment and warmth in it, the combination she often had when I’d said something she hadn’t expected.
‘You’d come wedding dress shopping,” she said.
‘I’d come if it was useful,” I said. “I’m not going to sit in a velvet chair and tell you everything looks beautiful. But I can tell you when something is right.”
A pause.
‘How would you know?” she asked.
‘The same way you know,” I said. “You stop looking at the dress.”
She turned back to the window.
We drove the rest of the way without talking, which was comfortable in the way our silences had become comfortable-not empty, ust unburdened.
When we got back to the penthouse, she went directly to the guest room, said she wanted a shower, and closed the door with the quiet finality of someone who needed an hour of not being available to anyone.
I understood this completely.
I went to the kitchen and made coffee I didn’t particularly need and stood at the window and looked at the city and let my phone sit on the counter until it buzzed.
Jayce.
I picked it up.
“You got to her,” he said.

told you I would.”
“I know.” A pause. “She okay?”
“She’s in the shower,” I said. “She’ll be fine.”

“Good.” Another pause, the kind Jayce used when he had more to say and was organizing the order of it. “So I had Dante followed. After she got out of the car.”
