DENISE

I woke up to Kieran’s voice.

Not loud-the penthouse walls were solid enough that sound didn’t travel the way it did in ordinary buildings-but present, carrying through the slightly open door with the particular quality of someone who was choosing their words carefully and delivering them with complete authority.

I lay still for a moment, oriented myself, remembered that I’d fallen asleep fully dressed and that the last thing I remembered was deciding to sit on the bed for five minutes before looking for the coffee I hadn’t collected from the counter.

Apparently five minutes had been eight hours.

reached for my phone.

The time was seven forty-two. I had three notifications from news alerts I’d set up months ago for pack business tracking-a habit From my time at Blackwood Enterprises that I hadn’t gotten around to disabling. I cleared them without reading them and then saw the fourth notification, from a general news aggregator, and stopped.

The headline used Kieran’s name and the words *mystery woman” and “first love* in a configuration that the tabloid industry had perfected over decades for maximum engagement and minimum factual content. The article, when I opened it, was the standard construction-a photograph, slightly grainy, of Kieran and a woman in what appeared to be a street setting. The woman’s face was obscured, turned away or deliberately cropped. The framing was heavy with implication and light on anything verifiable.

read it twice.

My first response arrived before I’d finished the first reading-a hot, immediate thing that I identified correctly as fury and then ooked at more carefully.

set the phone on the bed and looked at the ceiling.

I was going to marry Kieran Nightshade. This was documented and formal and mutual. The arrangement was what it was-honest, practical, with terms I had reviewed twice with my own lawyer. Neither of us had represented it as something romantic. Neither of us had made promises about personal history or prior feeling.

I did not have standing to be furious about a photograph of him with someone else before we had announced anything, before we had formalized anything publicly, before we were anything to each other in the way the world could see.

And beyond the standing question, there was the simpler question of what I actually knew.

I knew very little about Kieran’s personal history. He had told me, at Seren, that the arrangement was a contract between two people with things the other needed. He had been honest about his reasons. He had not told me there was no one else, because hadn’t asked, because the arrangement as constructed didn’t require that of either of us.

I had asked him once who he was in love with.

He had told me to ask again in a month.

That conversation was still outstanding.

+breathed in slowly. Out.

The fury was my own problem and not a useful one. I had decided to do this with clear eyes and clear eyes included looking at myself honestly, which meant acknowledging that whatever I felt about a photograph of Kieran and an obscured woman was information about me, not a grievance was entitled to aim at him.

I picked up my phone again to close the article.

There was a text from Dante.

I stared at it for a moment with the particular tiredness of someone who had hoped, perhaps naively, that getting out of a car at a red light would have communicated something final enough to hold for at least twelve hours.

*Don’t trust Kieran. He has secrets you don’t know about. Call me.*

I typed back without deliberating: *Worry about yourself. I can take care of myself. Don’t text me again.”

I sent it and put the phone face-down.

Then I picked it up again and refreshed the news aggregator.

The article was gone.

Not just pushed down the feed-gone, the link returning a 404, the cached version already pulled. The speed of it was impressive in a way I filed without surprise. Kieran’s PR team was apparently thorough and fast, which was consistent with everything else about how his operation ran.

I got up, used the bathroom, changed into clothes that hadn’t been slept in, and went downstairs.

He was in the kitchen.

This was not what I had expected-I had expected an empty kitchen and a note, or coffee already made and Kieran in his office on another call. What I had not expected was Kieran Nightshade in a grey shirt with his sleeves rolled to the elbow, standing at the stove with a pan, managing what appeared to be eggs with the focused competence of someone who had been doing this long enough to not need to think about it.

He looked up when I came in. A small smile appeared on his face, unguarded, one that I have never seen before. I wanted to speak, when he beat me to it.

“Morning,” he said. “Sit down. Five minutes.”

I sat down at the kitchen counter and looked at the pan and then at him.

“You cook,” I said.
