The store around us was doing its ordinary business-other shoppers, soft background music, the ambient noise of a retail space with no interest in the conversation happening in its scarf section. The normalcy of it was almost funny.

I stood with all of it-the photograph, the name, the argument she’d constructed-and felt myself go through the same process I’d done in the bathroom, in the corridor, in the police station interview room. The thing where I took what was in front of me and looked at it without the emotional charge first.

What did I actually know?

I knew there was a photograph that had been published and pulled. I knew that Kieran had a history he hadn’t fully shared with me, which was something I had already acknowledged when I’d asked him at Seren and he’d told me to ask again in a month. I knew that the arrangement between us was documented and honest about what it was. I knew that his father had called me the right one, and his mother had taken me wedding dress shopping, and Rosaline Nightshade was not a woman who performed things she didn’t mean.

I also knew that Lyra Blackwood was standing in front of me with a screenshot on her phone and the particular desperation of someone whose usual weapons had stopped working, reaching for whatever was left.

“Lyra,” I said.

She waited.

“You’ve spent four years,” I said, “trying to make me feel like a stand-in. In bathrooms, in corridors, in office buildings, in party venues, in hospital rooms.” I kept my voice even and my eyes on hers. “You have dedicated a significant portion of your life to ensuring that I understood my own smallness.” I paused. “And I’m standing here.”

She said nothing.

“Still here,” I said. “Different address, different name attached to mine, different floor of a different building-but still here, still upright, still buying scarves on a Thursday afternoon while you cross a store to tell me things you think will hurt me.” Llooked at her steadily. “What does that tell you about how effective your approach has been?”

“Alyssa Stone-”

“Is someone I don’t know,” I said. “And neither do you, not really. You have a screenshot from a tabloid article that was pulled within hours and a name you’ve clearly researched specifically for this conversation.” I tilted my head slightly. “How long have you been holding this? Since the Grand Aldric? Before?”

Her jaw tightened.

“You’ve been waiting,” I said. “You saw me at the party and you went looking for something that would land, and you found a name and a photograph and you’ve been carrying it around until you could use it.” I looked at her with something that wasn’t quite pity and wasn’t quite sympathy but was adjacent to both. “That must be exhausting.”

“You don’t know what he’s-”

between me and Kieran Nightshade is not your business and not your leverage and not available for you to use.” I picked up the scarf I’d set down. “And+ want you to go. Before stop being measured about this and start being the version of myself that you’ve been consistently underestimating”

She looked at me.

The fury was still there underneath but the structure of the confrontation had gone–the careful thing she’d built around the name and the photograph and the argument about stand-ins had not done what she’d needed it to do, and she was standing in the wreckage of it in a store on a Thursday with her hair not quite right and nobody beside her.

“You’ll see,” she said. It was quieter than everything else she’d said. The last thing, the thing you said when the prepared version had run out.

“Maybe,” I said. “But not from you.”

She left.

I stood in the scarf section and breathed once, carefully, around my ribs which still had opinions about stress.

Then I looked at the scarf in my hands-dark blue, good quality, the kind that worked in cold weather and looked considered rather than practical. I turned it over.

I thought about Alyssa Stone.

I was going to think about her whether I chose to or not, which was simply honest. The name had landed, as Lyra had intended it to land, and pretending otherwise would be the kind of self-deception I’d trained out of myself over years of surviving on accurate information.

What I was going to do with it was the question.

I had told Kieran at Seren that I would find out who he was in love with. He had told me to ask again in a month. I had asked, two weeks later, and he had said he’d be ready when I was. That conversation was still open,

I was going to have it.

Not because Lyra had told me to. Not in the reactive, destabilized way that Lyra had intended when she’d crossed a store floor with a screenshot and a prepared argument.

But because I was someone who operated on accurate information, and there was a piece of information I didn’t have, and I was going to get it in my own time and on my own terms.
