DENISE

Kieran left at two.

He had his jacket on and his phone in his hand and the particular focused quality of someone whose afternoon had already organized itself in his mind before he’d walked out the door. He stopped at the entrance to say something about the meeting running late if the Kellerman people wanted to extend, that he’d text if it pushed past six, that there was food in the refrigerator if I didn’t want to wait.

Standard. Practical. The ordinary architecture of two people managing a shared space.

And then he turned back and pressed his mouth briefly to my cheek.

It lasted two seconds. Warm, certain, the contact of something that had decided it was normal and was simply being normal. Then he was gone, the door closing behind him with the clean click of a well-fitted door in a well-built building.

I stood in the entrance hall for a moment.

This was the thing about small gestures that arrived without announcement-they didn’t give you time to prepare a response, to decide how to receive them, to construct the appropriate container for them. They arrived and then they were done, and you were left standing in an entrance hall with the sensation of them still present in the specific spot where they’d landed, and the only thing to do was continue with the afternoon and file it in the part of your mind that was accumulating things you weren’t yet ready to sort.

The file was getting full.

I went upstairs to the study and opened the university module.

The first hour was good.

The module was financial structures-exactly what I’d wanted, exactly what I’d looked for when I’d chosen the program, and it had the specific quality of education that was answering questions I had already been carrying. The theoretical framework for what I’d been doing intuitively with the resale accounts and the redirected funds and the credit union infrastructure-seeing it laid out with precision and terminology and the logical scaffolding

that made the intuition legible.

I took notes. Real ones, the kind I hadn’t taken since the pack academy, with the focused attention of someone who was not going to waste the opportunity of finally being in the room where this information lived.

At three-fifteen my phone rang.

Mrs. Adeyemi.

“I’m sorry to call during the day,” she said, which was how she began calls she felt were an imposition, regardless of whether they were. “There’s a question about the back section. A maintenance question.”

“You don’t need to apologize,” I said. “Tell me.”

The back section of St. Mira’s had been flagged in the structural assessment I’d commissioned six weeks ago-a report I had quietly arranged through one of the contacts Adaeze Obi had connected me with, someone who worked in property evaluation and who had assessed the building with the thorough, unsparing attention of someone being paid to find problems rather than reassure.

The problems had been specific. Patchwork wiring in the storage areas, an HVAC system with components that were past their recommended service life, ventilation in the back corridor that was technically functional and practically insufficient. The report had prioritized them in order of urgency and the wiring had been first.

“The electrician came this morning,” Mrs. Adeyemi said. “He’s finished the storage room and the corridor, and he says the panel in the back office needs replacement but he wants authorization before he orders the parts.”

“Authorize it,” I said. “Send me his estimate when you have it.”

“It’s more than we budgeted for this quarter.”

“That’s fine,” I said. “Authorize it.”

A pause-the particular pause of someone who was not accustomed to the budget being fine. “Denise.”

“I mean it. Get the panel replaced.” I set my pen down. “How are the children? I’ve been meaning to come in person. Not to deliver things-properly.”

“They’ve been asking,” she said. “Particularly Juno.” Juno was seven and had decided, on my last visit, to show me every drawing she had made in the past three months. The showing had

taken forty-five minutes. “She has a new series apparently. She hasn’t shown anyone because she’s saving them.”

“For me?”

“For the right audience,” Mrs. Adeyemi said, with the dry warmth she used for children she found particularly herself. “Her words.”

I looked at the university module open on the laptop. The afternoon was unscheduled. Kieran was across town. The module would be there tomorrow and the day after.

“I’m coming today,” I said. “This afternoon. Is that-”

“The door is always open,” Mrs. Adeyemi said, which was not a figure of speech. The door at St. Mira’s was open in the specific, literal sense of a building that understood that children needed to know exits were available.

“I’ll bring something from the bakery on Fenwick Street,” I said. “The one with the cardamom

buns.”

“The children will hear the words *cardamom buns* and the afternoon schedule will dissolve entirely,” she said. “But yes. Come.”

I changed into something that wasn’t study clothes, pulled on my coat, and went downstairs.

The card was on the counter.
