I looked at Kieran over the top of her head.

His expression did the thing it sometimes did when he thought I couldn’t see it-the thing that was not the managed version, the kind of expression that showed when the management had temporarily run out of reasons to be on.

I looked at him and he looked at me and Juno was holding on and the ward was doing its quiet early morning business around us.

“You came,” Juno said. Into my shoulder, slightly muffled.

“I said I would,” I said.

“You were going to see my drawings.”

“I know.” My voice was still rough. “I’m still going to.”

She pulled back enough to look at my face with the critical assessment of a seven-year-old determining whether an adult was telling the truth to her or just trying to pacify her.

Apparently I passed her assessment as she nodded her head and accepted it.

“I made three more,” she said. “Last night. At the other house.” She meant the emergency accommodation the service had arranged-I had been told this somewhere in the paramedic sequence, that all the children had been relocated to a much safer place to stay until this issue could be resolved. “Kofi said drawing was stupid but he was also drawing.”

“Kofi is allowed to draw,” I said.

“He said it was a map.”

“Maps are a form of drawing.”

She considered this seriously. “I’ll tell him that.”

Mrs. Adeyemi had come to the side of the bed. She was looking at me with the expression she had used since I was small-worriness present on her faace, although she was trying er bests to keep a straight face.

“The children are all safe,” she said. “All of them. Twelve out, twelve accounted for. The back section-“A pause. “There will be work to do. But the building stood.”

The brick wall held, I thought.

“The wiring,” I said.

“The new wiring,” she said, with a particular emphasis on new. “The back section was the old wiring-not the areas the electrician had finished. The report, the assessment you commissioned-” She paused again. “The new work held it where it needed holding.”

I looked at her.

“If the wiring had not been replaced in the areas it was replaced,” she said carefully, “it would have spread faster.”

I sat with this.

The assessment I had commissioned six weeks ago. The electrician who had been authorized this same morning. The parts the wiring man had ordered for the back panel that he hadn’t yet installed, and the parts for the front corridor that he had installed.

The things that had held. I did not say anything.

Mrs. Adeyemi put her hand over mine-the one without the line in it-briefly, and then released it and straightened up and became again the woman who ran things and had thirty- two years of practice at it.

“You will rest today,” she said. “That is not a request.”

“I know,” I said.

She looked at Kieran with the assessing attention of someone who had been evaluating people on behalf of children for a long time. Whatever she saw appeared to satisfy something.

“She needs rest,” she said to him.

“I know,” he said.

She nodded once-the specific nod that meant she had said what she needed to say and trusted it to be received-and then looked at Juno, who was still on the edge of the bed with the expression of someone who had arrived at a decision.

“I’m leaving the drawings here,” Juno said. She had a folded piece of paper, I realized now, that she’d been holding since she came in. She set it on the blanket beside me with the careful

deliberateness of someone presenting something significant. “You can look at them when you wake up.”

“I’ll look at them first thing,” I said.

She nodded, satisfied. Then she climbed down from the bed and took Mrs. Adeyemi’s hand and they went to the door, and Mrs. Adeyemi looked back once more-at me, then at Kieran, then at me-and then they were gone.

The door settled closed.

The ward resumed its quiet around us, as I could hear the subtle chaos behind the door, where people kept on going about their daily business, I looked at Juno’s folded paper on the blanket.
