The corridor was the particular bland neutrality of all hospital corridors-the same floor, the same light, the same institutional quality of a space designed for function rather than comfort.
I was standing in it with the specific sensation of a man who had walked out of a room carrying more than he’d walked in with.
He knew about the car.
I turned this over with the focused attention of someone trying to identify where a leak had come from. Not the fact of his knowing-the fact of when he had known, how long he had known, whether this was recent intelligence or something he had been holding for weeks while I sat across from him in venues and hospital rooms and corridor confrontations with no awareness that he had it.
The not-knowing how long was the part that bothered me.
Kieran came out of the room.
He pulled the door closed with the careful movement of someone making sure the person inside wasn’t disturbed, which was its own small communication about where his attention
was.
He looked at me.
“Back away from her,” he said. Quiet, direct. “Focus on Elena. Build the life you’ve been building. Leave Denise alone.”
“I’m not giving up on her,” I said.
“She’s not yours to give up on.”
“She has been mine for four years,” I said. “Whatever document you’ve both signed doesn’t change four years.”
“The four years you spent keeping her hidden and leaving her in crashed cars,” Kieran said, still at the same even register, “are not the endorsement you think they are.”
I looked at him. “You appear to be a knight. You’re not. You’re hiding a whole family behind

her back and sooner or later she is going to find that out and when she does-”
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“I know about Alyssa,” I said. “I know she’s in this city. I know she has been in your life throughout this entire arrangement and I know you haven’t told Denise the full version of what that means.” I held his gaze. “You want to talk about honesty?”
Something moved in his expression.
“I know why you chose her,” I said. “Specifically her. Not just because she needed an exit or because the arrangement was convenient. Ten years ago Elena chose me. You wanted her and she chose me and you’ve been building toward something ever since.” I paused. “Is Denise an exit strategy or is she a retaliation?”
“I moved on from Elena a long time ago,” he said.
“Then what about Alyssa? She’s in the city, she’s kept her distance, cooperative, quiet-does she even know you’re marrying someone? Does she know about the ceremony?” I watched his face. “And the child. You plan on acknowledging him at some point, or does he stay in the background while you build your respectable public life?”
His expression changed.
The controlled, even register dropped out of it.
His hand connected with my jaw before I had fully processed that he had moved.
I hit the wall. Not hard enough to be anything except what it was-a loss of the particular
control he had been maintaining throughout this conversation, the specific moment when the thing underneath the management broke through.
I laughed.
Not because it was funny. Because the laugh was the fastest available response to a situation that had just confirmed something I had been building a theory about for weeks.
Kieran did not lose control.
Except, apparently, about this.
I straightened up. Fixed my jacket. Let him see that I had registered what had just happened and what it meant.
He was looking at me with the expression of a man who was already reassembling the control,

putting the management back in place with the focused urgency of someone who had just revealed something they hadn’t intended to reveal.
“We’re done,” he said.
“Apparently,” I said.
He walked back toward the ward.
I watched him go.
Then I turned and walked the other direction, through the corridor, past the nursing station, through the double doors that led to the main hospital atrium.
I needed air. I needed the particular reset that came from moving through neutral space without being observed by anyone who knew what they were looking at.
I walked.
The pediatric wing was on the east side of the building. I knew this because I had been here before-years ago, a different reason, a different person. I was not heading there deliberately. I was walking and the corridor went east and I followed it.
The directory board was at the junction of the east wing and the main corridor.
I stopped.
Not because I had been looking at it. Because a name on the board had arrived in my peripheral vision with the particular quality of something that the brain registered before the eyes had properly focused.
*Stone – Pediatric Ward 4.*
I stood in the corridor junction and looked at the name.
