Before leaving, he turned to his wife and daughter. "Keep calling her until she picks up. When she finally does, do not argue with her. Do not yell at her. Do whatever it takes to coax her into coming home, or at least agree to meet us somewhere. Just get her in front of us. Understood?"
With that, he hurried out the door.
The second he was gone, Miranda and Chloe collapsed onto the couch and spent an hour watching soap operas, not making a single call.
"Mom, this is so annoying. I'm not calling her again. When Dad gets back, just tell him I tried. I am not begging her."
Miranda sighed. "I don't want to call her either, sweetie, but your father's company desperately needs that money. What are we supposed to do?"
Chloe's eyes lit up. "Mom, I have an idea. She's obviously ignoring our calls on purpose, but she'll definitely read her text messages. She's obsessed with her dead mother's stuff, right? Text her and tell her you still have some of her mother's belongings. That'll lure her back. Dad gets what he wants, and we don't have to keep calling her."
Miranda beamed. "You're brilliant! Why didn't I think of that? I'll text her right now. There's no way she won't come running."
She quickly pulled out her phone and started typing.
[Stella, we've been trying to call you. I just wanted to let you know that I still have some of your mother's belongings. I'm hoping you can come back to the house to get them.]
She hit send.
Stella was in the middle of chatting with Carter Coleman, who had just texted to let her know the modifications she requested were finished.
Seeing the new message pop up, she tapped on it.
A cold smirk touched her lips as she typed her reply.
[Trying this hard to lure me back? Aren't you afraid I'll tear your house apart again?]
Miranda, eyes glued to the screen, scoffed when the reply came through. "Look at that. She texted right back. I knew she was ignoring our calls."
