"Exactly, Dad. Look at how greedy she acted just now. She's clearly not cut out for high society."
Orville sighed. "You two really can't see past the surface. Yes, she took the card, but didn't she earn it?
I asked Steward to get her number—did she give it to him? You might be looking down on Ms. Todd, but she might not even be interested in Steward!"
Agnes thought about it. It was true; the girl hadn't given her grandson her number.
By normal logic, the Shipley family was incredibly wealthy. If she really was greedy, she would have jumped at the chance to get closer to their heir. But she refused. Why?
"Didn't she say they could exchange numbers later? Maybe she'll do it while he's walking her out."
"Mark my words, Steward will come back empty-handed."
"I don't believe it. My grandson is outstanding. Do you have any idea how many girls are fighting for his attention?"
Helen chimed in, "I don't believe it either."
Orville took a sip of tea and said slowly, "Then just wait and see if I'm right."
Meanwhile, the subject of their debate was walking Stella to the front gate.
"Ms. Todd, let's exchange numbers. It was my grandfather's request, and I need to report back to him."
"No thank you, I don't have a smartphone. There's no need to see me out, Mr. Shipley. Please stay here."
Stella turned and kept walking.
Steward chased after her. "Ms. Todd, you can drop the act. I saw you drive off in a luxury sports car two days ago.
I don't know why you're dressing up like this, but giving me your number shouldn't be a big deal. I promise I won't bother you unnecessarily."
She was blowing him off so blatantly! Claiming she didn't have a phone?
Couldn't she have come up with a better excuse? In this day and age, who would believe that?
Even his elderly grandparents practically lived on their phones.
Since when had he lost his charm?
