Stella had just parted ways with Zane at the coffee shop, never expecting to run into him again so soon at the cafeteria.
Neither Chloe nor Zane had noticed Stella. They had chosen a booth to talk privately.
The walk from the coffee shop to the cafeteria wasn't far, so Zane had headed straight there after receiving Chloe's text.
Stella, on the other hand, had driven to pick up Sylvie at Channing Hall, which was on the other side of campus. That detour had eaten up some time.
As a result, Zane had arrived before Stella.
Seeing that the two hadn't spotted her, Stella grabbed Sylvie and steered her toward a booth just one table away from Zane.
She sat down with her back to Zane, putting her back-to-back with Chloe.
From here, she could perfectly eavesdrop on their conversation.
Right after separating from her, Chloe had immediately asked Zane out for lunch. It had to be about the perfume.
Listening in right now might yield some unexpected information.
Sylvie, completely oblivious to Stella's ulterior motives, didn't care where they sat.
Once they settled in, Sylvie said, "Stella, I'll go order the food. Just wait here."
She wanted to get a massive spread of all the best dishes to treat her friend.
"Sure, go ahead." This was exactly what Stella wanted. It gave her the perfect opportunity to tune into the conversation behind her.
Chloe had absolutely no idea Stella was sitting right behind her. She had arranged to meet Zane precisely to discuss the perfume.
"Thanks for coming out. I actually wanted to talk to you about something."
"You could have just texted me. You really didn't need to go out of your way to treat me to lunch."
