Today was absolutely picture-perfect. Everything he could have possibly wanted was coming true. The fortune he had dumped into throwing this massive gala was entirely worth it.
Once the initial rush of euphoria settled, Julius's phone buzzed. He pulled it out and answered it; it was Nadine, telling him it was time to greet the guests.
"Let's go, Grandma's calling for us."
Holding his little wife's hand, he led her out of the room.
Meanwhile, Sabrina had been dragged straight into Jason's room.
The second he pulled her inside, he slammed the door shut.
"Jason, what the hell is your problem? Why are you acting so suspiciously? What could you possibly need to say to me that requires hiding in a room?"
"Sabrina, do you know exactly who is attending the event tonight?"
Sabrina nodded. "Yeah, I know. It's the Autumn Gala, and your grandmother wanted to liven things up, so she invited everyone over to celebrate. Right?"
"Ha! You're thinking way too simply. Gran specifically invited a bunch of wealthy heiresses tonight because it's a glorified blind date for me. She wants me to pick a girl who catches my eye to be my girlfriend."
Sabrina nodded understandingly. "Well, that sounds great. Make sure you take a really good look around. If you find someone you like, let me know and I'll help you vet her. Don't let your grandmother's hard work go to waste."
"Sabrina, I don't want to look around, and I definitely don't want to get married. Will you help me out?"
"Jason, what are you getting at?"
"If Gran asks, just pretend to be my girlfriend to help me get her off my back. Whatever you say, Gran will completely believe you." Nadine adored Sabrina—honestly, she treated her better than she treated her own biological grandson.
"Isn't that just lying to an elderly woman? That's messed up! Jason, do you like men? Be honest, I promise I won't judge you," Sabrina guessed.
Nadine's health wasn't the greatest; she absolutely couldn't handle that kind of emotional whiplash.
"Sabrina, this is a mutually beneficial arrangement! Don't think I don't know your family is pressuring you to get married too. If your family thinks I'm your boyfriend, they'll definitely back off."
"My situation is completely different from yours. I have my older brother to act as a shield. As long as he's not married, I have a perfectly valid excuse to stall my family. You're different. Your older brother is already married."
She had just been brutally betrayed by her cheating ex-boyfriend and her best friend. The last thing on earth she wanted was to fake a relationship with a guy.
Seeing that she was completely immovable, Jason grew frustrated. He slammed her against the wall, grabbed both of her wrists, pinned them above her head, and crushed his lips against her endlessly chattering mouth.
He had never been able to win an argument against her, not even when they were back in school.
Since he couldn't win with words, he decided to just seal her mouth shut so she couldn't say another word!
