Yvonne felt a surge of resentment toward Nadine. She walked over and greeted Rhoda.
Rhoda had been worried about not knowing anyone, so she was naturally glad to see Yvonne.
"Yvonne, you're here too."
Ever since Weber Harper was grounded and punished by his grandfather, her arranged marriage to him had fallen through. Now, her father was desperately trying to set her up with other wealthy heirs.
She didn't know how her father managed to score an invitation to the Blackwoods' Autumn Gala, but he had insisted she come tonight to network.
Her father made it clear—if one of the Blackwood brothers took an interest in her, her future would be secured.
She knew the Blackwoods were the wealthiest family in the city. With an opportunity like this, of course she was going to show up.
Even if she couldn't hook a Blackwood, landing any other rich heir would be a win.
Yvonne smiled haughtily. "Of course I'm here. The Jeters and the Blackwoods go way back. I basically grew up with the two brothers; this place is like a second home to me."
Deep down, Yvonne looked down on Rhoda for being an illegitimate child, but parading her superiority in front of her fed her vanity perfectly.
Rhoda looked envious. "That's amazing. Do you think you could introduce me to the Blackwood brothers later?"
"That's easy. See that guy over there in the pink shirt holding a drink? That's the younger brother, Jason."
Yvonne let her gaze wander before lifting her chin toward another figure. "And see the tall, incredibly handsome man in the white shirt and tie? That's the eldest, Julius Blackwood."
Instead of answering, Yvonne asked, "Rhoda, are you sure she's really just a country bumpkin?"
Rhoda nodded with absolute certainty. "Positive. She's the eldest daughter of the Hawthorne family. Her half-sister, Chloe, is a friend of mine. Chloe told me herself—Stella was dragged off to the countryside by her grandfather when she was ten. She lived in the middle of nowhere for a decade and only came back a few months ago. I heard she didn't even finish middle school before dropping out. She's an uneducated hick."
Yvonne felt a sudden wave of clarity. "I see. Rhoda, what do you think would happen if she totally humiliated herself in front of all these people tonight? Do you think Julius would be so disgusted by her lack of class that he'd divorce her?"
"It's possible. Wait, Yvonne, do you have feelings for him?"
"Of course I love Julius! He was supposed to marry me. This woman ruined everything, and I hate her."
"So, how do you want to deal with her?" Rhoda could instantly tell that Yvonne was plotting something.
