Chapter 10
Natasha’s POV
Natasha always noticed everything. Particularly, she noticed the strange look that passed over the newcomer’s face when she mentioned the Stoneridge girl’s death.
Even though the new girl quickly schooled her expression into one of neutrality, Natasha’s suspicions began to rise immediately. Elena–or so she said her name was–had already been caught in one lie since arriving in Nightshade. Who was to say that she wasn’t keeping more secrets?
“No,” Elena quickly said, perhaps a bit too quickly. “I didn’t know her. But I’ve heard of her.”
“Hm.” Natasha’s fingers tightened around the invitation. “The way you looked just now, I could have sworn you were going to be sick.”
“I’m… not feeling particularly well,” Elena admitted.
Natasha found that hard to believe. But before she could dwell on it further, Tyler turned to Elena and smiled warmly.
“You should get some rest if you’re not feeling well. Feel free to bring your meal to your room. Muriel will show you the way. Speaking of which, Muriel-” He indicated the Omega that was standing nearby. “Please don’t assign Elena any more exhausting tasks until she’s had a chance to settle in. She’s been through a lot.”
The Omega’s lip curled faintly, but she nodded and led the new girl away. Natasha watched her go with a bitter feeling twisting in her stomach.
It was bad enough already that Tyler and his father ever let Natasha be part of any important decision, but to openly contradict her? In front of an Omega and the new pack member, no less?
Growing up in a small pack, Natasha’s parents and brothers spoilt her as much as they could. After she married Samson, Natasha always threw tantrums at the pack members when she was given any right to make any big decisions. Samson and Tyler then avoided allowing her to be deeply involved in the pack’s affairs, just letting her be a trophy luna.
They respected her as Luna mother and wife though. Natasha was just happy to be a woman of high class who could manage the small household tasks in her pack. But now “Elena” was here, and both her husband and stepson were already treating the newcomer like a star guest in Natasha’s home–the one place where Natasha was supposed to be in charge.
“She’s a seductress, probably even a witch,” Natasha’s Delta, Melvin, murmured. Natasha turned to see that her friend had slipped out of the kitchen and was leaning against the wall, having heard the whole exchange. “I can smell it all over her.”
Natasha lifted a brow. “What makes you say that?”
Melvin shrugged one muscular shoulder. “Look at her. The way she makes doe eyes at Tyler–if she was a slave before as you said, then it’s possible she tried to seduce an Alpha.”
Seducing an Alpha. It seemed somewhat far–fetched, but if Elena had attempted to steal an Alpha from his mate or perhaps use pregnancy–legitimate or otherwise–to blackmail him, then it was an offense that was punishable with indentured servitude.
“Just look into it. That’s all I’m saying,” Melvin added before slipping away.
Natasha couldn’t help but feel compelled to do a little digging into Elena’s past now. Unbidden, her eyes flicked
