Chapter 11

Kade didn’t know it had gotten this bad. When they slept together, he never asked her to fully remove her clothes; did that mean that she’d looked like this even then, and he’d had no idea?

“Ajax.” Kade whispered to his nearby Beta, who stepped forward. “Were you aware of her physical condition?”

The Beta nodded. “The Omegas and Gammas bullied her relentlessly because of her indentured servant status.”

Kade frowned. Despite being a slave, Samantha had been the daughter of an Alpha. She shouldn’t have been abused like this. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried, Alpha. A few times, actually. But you said you didn’t want to hear it.”

“I guess I did say that, didn’t I?” Kade bit the inside of his cheek as he recalled numerous occasions when others would come to his office, attempting to plead on Samantha’s behalf, and he’d always turn them away.

Another wave of guilt washed over Kade.

He’d always thought that he’d been the only one mistreating Samantha–that his cruel words and the difficult chores he’d given her were all that she had to endure, and anything else was just her being spoiled and whiny.

Physical torment of this kind… He hadn’t realized just how much she’d truly suffered.

Kade didn’t want to care that Samantha had suffered. She’d caused the deaths of his parents and his sister’s gang rape and subsequent madness–a madness from which she would never recover.

And yet, knowing what he knew now… Knowing that Samantha was his fated mate all along… And most of all, holding their squirming child in his arms…

Kade couldn’t help but feel hurt and angry on her behalf.

A little while later, Kade found himself trudging up the steps to the pack house, more exhausted than he expected. It had taken hours to ensure the child–still nameless–was alright and cared for.

Miraculously, despite being born two months early, the little girl was relatively healthy. She would just need to spend a week in the natal care unit to ensure her body had developed properly.

“She got what she deserved.”

The soft echo of the voice made Kade’s footsteps freeze. Beside him, his Beta went still, too.

“Of course she did. What did the whore expect, trying to seduce the Alpha and climb the pack’s ranks through the child?”

Kade’s jaw ticked. Even without seeing the faces of those talking, he knew they were talking about Samantha. The woman who was dead. The woman whose child was now motherless.

Kade silently turned toward the sound of the voices. It didn’t take him long to find the small group of Gammas on their smoke break, sitting in the small alcove alongside the house.

“Sluts like that will sleep with anyone in power,” a male with sandy hair and a mean look about him was saying, much to the delight of his sneering friends.

“I don’t know,” another chimed in. “I tried to sleep with her once, but she started to struggle when I began taking her clothes off.”
