Chapter 100
“I can’t,” I said quickly, not wanting to reveal too much. “But I’ve… seen this condition before. If the mother was severely malnourished and weak, especially if her wolf was weakened due to this, then the child’s wolf will also be weak-thus causing the child to become chronically ill.”
Kade was silent for a long moment, although I could see the disbelief turning to shock in his eyes, and finally… regret.
I hardly dared to think that it was actually regret that I saw in his eyes-likely more embarrassment than anything –but something about it touched me deeply.
Clearing my throat, I looked back down at Ivy. She was sniffling and clearly uncomfortable; I could soothe her, at least, if nothing else. Maybe someday, once I honed my ability, I could do more. But for now, this would have to do.
I placed my hand on her forehead, just as I had with Debbie, and willed that cool blue energy from my palm and into her. Her squirming instantly began to slow down, and her sniffling stopped. She even smiled up at me a little.
When I looked up at Kade again, however, I was surprised to see that he had moved closer. He wasn’t looking at Ivy, but rather at me. His eyes were glowing the faintest tinge of metallic silver, and his nostrils were flaring.
“Your scent,” he muttered, his voice rough and low, “it’s…”
His voice trailed off, but he didn’t need to finish. I knew what was happening-I could feel it as certainly as I had felt my bond with Ivy. The mate bond between me and Kade suddenly flared to life like a live wire, the snapped taut as if our wolves were suddenly pulling on it from either end.
I stumbled forward without meaning to and smacked directly into Kade’s chest.
I gasped and went to move away, face flushing. But before I could, Kade caught my wrist, refusing to let me go.
For a long moment, there was only the sound of our tandem breaths and Ivy’s soft cooing. Kade’s eyes flashed a deeper metallic as he looked down at me.
“You’re good with her,” he whispered, moving closer.
He was going to kiss me.
I wanted him to. And I hated that I wanted him to, but I couldn’t help it. I wasn’t thinking straight; my entire world narrowed to the three of us. Ivy in my arms. Kade standing over me. A family that could have once been, had things been different.
Could it be that way now?
But just as he began to dip his head toward me, the door swung open. Kade abruptly stepped back when Serena walked into the room. She froze when she saw us; her eyes narrowed, then flickered down to Ivy in my arms.
“I should have known,” she barked, rushing across the room. “You’re using a baby now to manipulate Kade, aren’t you?”
Before I could react, Serena had snatched Ivy from my arms. Ivy’s little face instantly twisted and turned red, and she began to cry, squirming desperately in Serena’s embrace.
“You’re making her cry!” I said, reaching for Ivy. “She’s happier with me. Give her back!”
“No.” Serena held Ivy out of my reach. “You might have Kade fooled, but I know your type all too well. And I won’t let a woman like you take away my dead sister’s child.”

“You don’t know me at all,” I hissed, trying to grab Ivy again.
