But my grin faded when I found that the nursery door was already open, and Serena was holding Ivy.

I stepped into the room and grimaced at the sight. Serena was pacing the room, rapidly bouncing a fussing Ivy. My daughter was squirming uncomfortably, head bobbing too fast and hard for an infant her age. When I moved closer, I saw that her face was twisted and red with discomfort, and her cheeks were sticky with tears.

“What are you doing?” I gasped, rushing over. “You’re bouncing her too hard! She’s going to get sick!”

Serena didn’t pay me so much as a glance.

“I know what I’m doing,” she said simply, continuing her frantic pacing. She was shushing Ivy loud enough to wake the dead.

“Clearly not.” I reached for Ivy, my heart aching at the sight of my little girl in such discomfort. “Hand her over, Serena.”

“No! What do you know about caring for babies, anyway?” Serena whirled around to look at me, holding Ivy out of my reach. The hatred in her eyes was palpable, and the sight of it turned my stomach. “Or is that another laurel you’re going to add to your crown? Are you going to lie and say you’re a child-rearing expert now to win Kade’s favor?”

I bristled at her words. “I may not be an expert, but I can tell when a child is in distress-

“Don’t forget,” Serena said, taking a step closer, voice dropping to a dangerous whisper, “you’re still a prisoner here; Kade doesn’t trust you enough to wander the house without your babysitter following you around. So don’t act like you suddenly belong here.

I glanced over my shoulder at my guard, but surprisingly, I didn’t see him standing there. Interesting. I wondered if something had pulled him away.

But before I could dwell on it, Serena went on, “Meanwhile, Kade is still my fiance. He’s going to marry me soon because he trusts me, unlike you. The only reason why he’s keeping you around is because of that freakish’ ability’ you have.”

“It’s not freakish,” I muttered, jerking my chin upward indignantly. “Besides, that’s a lot of talk coming from a woman whose precious fiance postponed her wedding for another woman.”

Serena’s face flushed, indicating that my words had hit their mark, but I wasn’t done. She was still holding my daughter, still making her cry-I’d had enough. Enough of her constant conniving my entire life. Enough of her trampling on everything I loved for her own gain. She had already stolen my life from me once; she wouldn’t get my child now.

“I’ll take your place next,” I went on. My voice was low. Dangerous. “Kade already put off your wedding for me, and now he’s entrusting Ivy to me. Soon, he’ll see how unfit you are to be around his daughter and he’ll want you gone for good.”

“You scheming little fox-“Infuriated, Serena pulled her hand back to slap me. I didn’t flinch; I simply braced myself. Hell, I hoped she would hit me. I wanted her to leave a red welt on my face. Wanted to wear the evidence of her true colors splayed clearly across my face with pride for everyone to see.

But before she could hit me, Kade walked into the room with my guard on his heels. His eyes narrowed
