Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 106

Chapter 106

Elena’s POV

The chaos in the room suddenly turned into the deafening roar of silence.

No. No, no, no.

What had I just said?!

Kade and Serena both stared at me. Serena’s smug expression had turned to one of pale shock; meanwhile, Kade’s surprise was edged with a hint of suspicion. Rightfully so.

I had just admitted to the fact that Serena had allowed me-“Samantha”-to become a slave. The implications couldn’t possibly be worse. I needed to think quickly.

Before I could speak, Kade stepped closer. The broadness of his shoulders seemed to fill the room, towering over me like a dark shadow. His eyes flashed with anger. –

“Elaborate,” he whispered. It wasn’t a request; it was an order.

My mind raced. I needed to come up with an excuse, and quickly, before they realized that I was really talking about myself.

“I… I knew Samantha once,” I said. The lie slipped out more easily than I expected, although my throat felt so tight I could hardly breathe. “That’s really why I was so worried about Ivy. Part of it, at least. Samantha was my friend before she died.”

Kade’s eyes narrowed. “You were her friend?”

“Samantha had no friends,” Serena whispered, staring at me in disbelief.

My throat bobbed. “Yes. She… She told me that she wasn’t the real culprit of her alleged crimes. That someone else set her up to take the fall and her family didn’t step in to help her.” I really wanted to tell Kade everything, to say that Serena had been the one who really committed the crimes, but I couldn’t. It would be too suspicious.

Serena’s face went from pale to deep crimson. Clutching Ivy close, she said curtly, “You’re lying. There’s no way you knew Samantha! She was a recluse.”

“A recluse?” I spat out, hardly able to contain my wry laugh. “She wasn’t a recluse! She was desperate to know people, to be accepted in this pack and not be bullied relentlessly by her superiors! She was terribly lonely and miserable!”

Serena opened her mouth as if to argue further, but Kade held up his hand to stop her. His eyes, still fixed on were so calm it was terrifying. I felt like I was going to be sick.

“How did you come to know Samantha?” he asked in that low voice that was always more frightening than a shout.

My mind raced again. In Kade’s eyes, I was supposed to be an ex-rogue. Quickly coming up with a decision, I blurted out, “I met her once in the forest. There was a broken section of the wall.”

That much was true; I often used to retreat to the wall when I had a few minutes to get away on my own. I would

read or pick berries to soothe my starving belly. There was a part of the wall that was partially crumbled. I considered climbing through it more than once, running away and becoming a rogue, but I was too frightened, so I would just hang out there and imagine my escape instead.

“That’s impossible,” Serena protested.

I snapped my gaze to her. “It’s true. I found her there once, reading. I was hungry, and I almost robbed her, but then I realized that she was wearing rags and had nothing to steal.”

“How did you become friends after that?” Kade asked.

“I asked her why she was so poor-poorer than me, a rogue, even though I always thought people in packs were living the high life. She told me she was a slave.” When I looked at Kade, tears began to prick at the backs of my eyes, completely unbidden. “She told me how she was starved. Beaten. Tormented. Made to wear rags and live in a closet. I pitied her.”

Kade was silent. I could have stopped there. I probably should have stopped there. But for some reason, the words kept coming; it was as if a dam had burst and I couldn’t stop it.
