Chapter 105
And then it happened.
It started as hiccups. Ivy spit up a mouthful of her milk, and Elena gently lifted her over her shoulder, patting her little back and whispering soothing words.
Then the diarrhea began. It stank up the whole room like a dead animal, making Serena’s nose wrinkle with disgust, but she felt a surge of satisfaction nonetheless.
“Is she alright?” Serena asked, setting aside her coffee.
Elena checked Ivy’s diaper and grimaced. “I think she’s having some tummy troubles.”
“Well, you’d better deal with it, then.”
Elena shot Serena a withering look, but turned to leave so she could change Ivy’s diaper. That was when Ivy vomited for the first time-thick and foamy, tinged yellow and stinking of bile.
She vomited again and began to scream before Elena could even react.
“What have you done?!” Serena asked, jumping into action. She stormed over and wrenched Ivy away from
Elena’s arms.
Elena’s eyes were wide with shock as she went to take Ivy back. “I’m not sure! She must have picked up a stomach bug-”
“The milk you gave her must have been bad.” Serena twisted away from Elena’s reach.
“It wasn’t bad!” Elena protested, rushing over to the fridge and checking the expiration date on the bottle.
But then Elena fell silent. Her face blanched as she stared down at the date.
Little did she know that Serena had poured the milk into an old, empty bottle last night. One that was already long-expired.
Serena peered over Elena’s shoulder at the date and clicked her tongue disapprovingly. “Negligence. Just as I thought.”
“But-”
“What is going on in here?” Kade, having heard Ivy’s shrill cries, suddenly burst into the room. He took in the scene with confusion, then fear when he saw his daughter squirming and vomiting all over herself.
Behind him, Nellie, having come to give Debbie her morning medicine, entered and froze. Her face went pale the moment she saw Ivy, but Serena shot her a glare that silenced her before the words even came out.
Serena stepped away from Elena and pointed. “She gave Ivy expired milk and made her sick.”
Kade flushed and hurried over to Elena, snatching the bottle from her hands. While they were distracted, Serena deftly slipped the vial of antidote from her left sleeve and placed a drop on Ivy’s tongue. The baby squirmed and screamed, stinking of shit and vomit, but the antidote worked quickly. A moment later, Ivy began to calm down, and stopped gagging.

“Look! She’s better now,” Serena said, turning to Kade again and holding Ivy proudly for all to see. “I think she’s already soothed in my arms. She’s falling asleep.”
Kade looked at Ivy, noticing her sudden drowsiness. He didn’t know it was from the antidote, but that was the point. His shoulders fell with relief, and he gave Serena a grateful look.
The relief in his eyes quickly turned to anger, however, as he turned back to Elena. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, but no words came.
“You didn’t think to check the expiration date before you gave my daughter her milk?” he hissed.
Elena was as white as a sheet. “I… I didn’t…”
“That’s right. You didn’t. And now my daughter is sicker than she already was.” Kade walked over to Serena and placed his hand on Ivy’s forehead, wincing at the heat in her skin. “Elena, you’re absolved of your privileges,” he said quietly. Too quietly. “From now on, Serena will care for Ivy.”
Serena’s face lit up. Meanwhile, Elena’s pretty, pale skin deepened into a shade of crimson. She began to tremble with anger and hurt, which only served to feed Serena’s satisfaction.
“I’ll go clean her up,” Serena said softly, turning to leave.
But before she could go, Elena cried out, “Why would you listen to her?! Serena is the one who let Samantha become a slave!”
