Chapter 116
Elena’s POV
It was over. Kade was going to banish me from Crescent Hollow-away from my baby, the one thing I truly wanted-on threat of death if I returned.
All because of my selfish twin sister.
It was Serena who had been poisoning Ivy. Serena who slipped the vial into my pocket.
Serena who, once again, was framing me for a crime I had never been the one to commit. She was using me. Again. Like I was a fucking pawn in her grand game of chess.
I knew that history often repeats itself. I just supposed that I thought, naively, that it wouldn’t happen to me. But now here I was, being forced to leave my child behind with her. With the very woman who might kill her, just as she had indirectly killed me.
I wanted to protest, wanted to tell Kade that he was mistaken, that it was all part of Serena’s scheme to become his Luna. I wanted to tell him my real identity, and thus my real motives for being here…
But the words became stuck in my throat, and I couldn’t dislodge them. I knew he wouldn’t believe me. Serena had already ensured that whatever trust Kade had begun to feel for me was squashed by now.
Kade thought I was a schemer. A horrible woman who was okay with using a baby for her own gain.
How could I tell him the truth about any of it? He would likely just accuse me of lying completely, and would possibly even make me his slave again. Maybe even worse.
Besides, Kade wasn’t paying attention to me now. His focus was now on Ivy, screaming and squirming in Serena’s arms. She had been calm and happy with me, but that didn’t matter, did it? Kade only saw what he
wanted to see.
The guards escorted me out of the room, still holding my arms with iron grips. I didn’t bother fighting back. I was too exhausted by now. Too defeated. My legs were too weak.
Suddenly, as they dragged me down the hall, Debbie’s bedroom door burst open with a crash that shook the wall around it. Debbie came running into the corridor in her nightgown, sobbing and screaming, her eyes wild and her face streaked with tears.
“Help!” she cried. “Help! They’re coming for me!”
The guards’ footsteps halted. I knew right away, with a sinking feeling in my chest, that this was one of Debbie’s episodes – she thought her rapists were here. I wished I could soothe her with my ability, but the guards wouldn’t let me go.
Kade emerged from the nursery a moment later with Ivy in his arms. Debbie saw him and gasped, rushing toward him.
But then Serena stepped out from behind him.
Debbie froze mid-step. Her eyes widened as she spotted Serena, and it seemed as if every muscle in her body had suddenly gone rigid.

Then, with a shriek, she ran away and launched herself at me.
The force of Debbie’s embrace was enough to make me stagger backwards. My guards, completely taken by surprise, released me. I gasped, hitting the wall behind me, and wrapped my arms around her.
“Don’t let her hurt me!” Debbie sobbed into my shoulder. “Make her go away!”
I didn’t know what to say or do, but I didn’t have time to. Kade’s momentary look of confusion quickly turned into concern, and he walked over, prying Debbie off of me with the arm that wasn’t holding Ivy.
“Debbie,” he said in a tone that was definitely meant to convey calm, “no one is going to hurt you. Go back to bed; I’ll come see you in a few minutes.”
“No!” Debbie protested, struggling against his grip. Her eyes went wider when she caught another glimpse of Serena, and she pressed herself more firmly against me.
I glanced at Serena, who was still standing in the doorway to the nursery with a perturbed expression. Then I looked up at Kade, noticing the befuddled look in his eyes.
I decided to take my chance-not only to help Debbie, but to earn Kade’s trust again.
Wrapping my arms around her again, I said to Kade, “Let me soothe her. You know I can help.” I held his gaze firmly.
Kade hesitated as if considering it. My heart leapt. But then he shook his head and snapped his fingers at the guards. “Take Elena to her room,” he said curtly to my guard. “And you take Debbie back to bed.”
He turned and left after that, ignoring my protests entirely.
By the time the guards pried Debbie off of me and took me away, I had lost all the fight in me. It really was over; dawn was just a couple of hours away. There was nothing left to do. Kade refused to trust me, even when it came to Debbie.
I sat on the edge of my bed for a long time, wondering what to do. I wanted to try to sneak out and heal Debbie, but I knew it would only make matters worse.
Around three o’clock, a knock came at my door. I expected it to be Kade coming to interrogate me some more, or perhaps Serena coming to sneer at my misfortune, but I was surprised-and infuriated-to see Nellie enter my
room.
“What do you want?” I hissed, shooting to my feet.
She wrung her hands. “I came to apologize.’
“Apologize?” I scoffed. “I don’t buy it anymore, Nellie. You’re siding with Serena when you know damn well what her motives are. I don’t want to hear your empty ‘apologies’ and I don’t forgive you.’
))
“I just want to explain myself.” She stepped forward, and when she passed into the moonlight, I saw that her eyes were red-rimmed and puffy as if she’d been crying for some time. “It’s not so bad if you leave, you know. At least you get to leave.”
“What are you saying?” I growled.
