“I’m fine.” Kade didn’t glance at Serena-his eyes were fixed on the horizon, on the treeline outside, as if he could see “Elena” there. Serena would have once been offended by this, but it didn’t matter now. It wasn’t as if he could go running to her anymore.

But she didn’t expect him to say his next words. “Resume wedding preparations.”

Serena’s breath caught. “So soon? I thought-”

“We’ve postponed the wedding long enough. Now, more than ever, the pack needs a Luna.” He finally looked at Serena. “I think you’ve proven yourself more than capable after exposing Elena’s crimes like that.”

Serena wanted to grin, but she also didn’t want to seem too gleeful over Elena’s misfortune-and Ivy’s-so she maintained a cool, if not surprised, expression.

“Very well. I’ll continue the preparations.”

She leaned up on her tiptoes to kiss him, but Kade stopped her. He placed his hands on her shoulders and held her at arms’ length. “Save it for the wedding night.” His voice sounded rough; surely he was just restraining himself, right? “It will be… better that way.”

Serena nodded and stepped back, smiling faintly. “You’re right. Then, we can consider having little heirs.”

Kade’s gray eyes guttered briefly. “That reminds me-Ivy is getting better. The healers say she should make a full recovery. She will remain my official heir, whether we have children one day or not.”

“Oh.” Serena’s heart sank. She supposed that Kade expected her to be happy, but she wasn’t. Now that she’d killed Samantha, she looked at the baby in a much different light. She’d never really liked Ivy much, but it was even worse now. All she saw was another little devil like her mother, constantly in the way of Serena’s

ambitions.

It should have been Serena’s children who became the future heirs of Crescent Hollow. Not Ivy.

But Serena kept a smile on her face even if she wanted to scream.

“From now on,” Kade said, oblivious, leading Serena out of the room and down the hall to Ivy’s nursery, “I want you to raise Ivy like your own child. Honor Samantha’s memory. It’s not just the pack who needs you now more than ever; it’s Ivy who truly needs a mother figure.”

Kade guided Serena into Ivy’s nursery, where the child was cooing and kicking her tiny legs in the crib. She looked better. Healthier. Almost as if she’d never been sick at all.

What the fuck?

“Can you do that, Serena?” Kade placed his hand on Serena’s shoulder.

Serena quickly nodded and smiled, shoving her true feelings far down where he couldn’t sense them. “Of course!” she lied, reaching down and scooping Ivy up. The little whelp squirmed and fussed, already hating Serena, but Serena pretended to fawn over her like a mother would. For now, at least.
